Just seen on the morning news that volcanic ash from Iceland is drifting in the upper atmosphere south and is causing major cancellations in Scotland and drifting south. Leaving my box recording today to see how it develops.

fascinating to see the flights diminish this morning from northwest to southeast. Just a handful left over the southeast quadrant. Not so fascinating to have my daughter en route to BHX from Taiwan currently stuck at Schippol.
Question - no flights coming in from Atlantic so where are these being diverted to?

Bizzarre - 8 out of the 11 flights I've got are Whizz. A couple of BA and a BMI make up the rest. Why are Whizz still up there?

Nearest aircraft on the Network aircraft list is now over 270 miles away from me. And they're saying this could go on for days.
I wonder how this affects air ambulance flights, which are a vital service in the Highlands. They fly below 5000ft mostly, but can't see them in my aircraft list at the moment.

Should be an interesting day as the Southwest may see aircraft not normally in this area.

All dfown to a cloud of dust from Iceland...I've never seen that on my wife's shopping list when she goes to Iceland, so must be something new LOL :)

From midday today until at least 6pm, there will be no flights permitted in UK controlled airspace other than emergency situations. This has been applied in accordance with international civil aviation policy. We continue to monitor the situation with the Met Office and work closely with airline customers and adjoining countries.

What is most concerning is that I have just read this headline on the Daily Telegraph website:

It also goes on to say:

The cloud first reached Britain on 22 June and was followed by reports of a choking smog containing sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid which attacked the lungs of its victims.
The amount of gas produced was enough to cause increase temperatures for a whole summer.

On the way to take a close look at the plume. They've got some balls in that airplane amd rather them than me. Just been talking about it on BBC news and apparently it's a very hazardous expedition indeed.

G-FBFI has landed in Biggin Hill, it performed a very short base legg and landing according to the network more associated with low speed aircraft. Must have been a sight to see. Guess you can only do this now.

The cloud of volcanic ash continues to cover much of the UK. Following a review of the latest Met Office information, NATS advises that restrictions will remain in place in UK controlled airspace until 1300 (UK time) tomorrow, Friday 16 April, at the earliest.
However, flights from Northern Ireland and the Western Isles of Scotland to and from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Prestwick may be allowed in the period from 0100 (UK time) to 1300 (UK time) tomorrow subject to individual co-ordination. North Atlantic traffic to and from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Prestwick and Belfast may also be allowed in the period.
We will review further Met Office information and at 0230 (UK time) tomorrow we will advise the arrangements that will be in place through to 1800 (UK time) tomorrow. However be aware that the situation cannot be said to be improving with any certainty as the forecast affected area appears to be closing in from east to west. We continue to work closely with airports, airlines, and the rest of Europe to understand and mitigate the implications of the volcanic eruption.

G-FBFI has been re-registered G-CHAI and is operated by Farnborough company Hanger 8, but as we reuse Mode S codes in the UK, it has not been updated by many users. Was squawking 7000 so was VFR throughout.
It appears to have been trying to exit the UK at 5000ft, but I reckon it was turned back at the Belgian/Netherlands airspace boundary, so it returned to Biggin.

Cross with myself that my free 30 day trial of the excellent FastStone Capture (screen capture program) had just expired - since rectified (ie paid for - well worth it!) ...
Hit PrtSc button instead - and messily imported into other programs - hopefully I can attach jpg of said plane's route.

Here's a screenshot of G-FBFI as it was crosing Biggin Hill at 19.52 BST heading towards the Dover Vor. I noticed too that he had come back soon afterwards.

Well from where I live on the coast in Southern England, it's nice clear skies, I can see the stars. I read the BBC news online that volcanic ash will reach ground level in Scotland this evening spreading South of the UK overnight.

Hope you don't mind me posting this light hearted article here ....... but it seems the reason for the current problems may be due to my beloved football club "Newcastle United"
An NUFC club spokesman has refused to comment on claims that the source of the dust cloud covering parts of Europe was in fact St.James' Park and not Iceland as previously thought.
Cleaners preparing the trophy cabinet for the expected arrival of the Championship trophy on Tyneside next week have been blamed for the release of ancient material.
Hope we will all be seeing planes back on our screens later today

A small amount of the ash has been coming to the ground here (orkney). I have harvested about a teaspoon of it from the bonnet of the car as a souvenir of why there is a gap in our log!!

I am currently tracking the 'Natural Environment Research' aircraft that took off from Cranfield about 50 minutes ago. It's been flying steadily at FL9950. It's due to be up for about three to four hours monitoring the ash. I understand it was flying towards East Anglia. .

Got home from work to read that Scottish and Northern Ireland airspace would be re-opening from 1900 - expected to see loads of traffic via the network.
My landline broadband dead - have just reconnected via 3 mobile phone dongle instead! Now reconnected. Appears I'm not missing much!
Only flight I can see over UK is TOM128 (G-OOBK) a B763 (westbound transatlantic) - skirting the North Antrim coast. Passengers on left hand side window seats would have (may have) seen a great view of the Giant's Causeway if there was any daylight left - doubtful!

Hi all, unbelievable, fired up the RB - My Flights 0, Network 207. Only a few around SE France/N Italy, plenty over Portugal and Spain. The skies in SW Cornwall are quite dramatic - no vapour trails at all - last time that happened was 2001.

My mate in NATS tells me that it is highly likely U.K. airspace will be cloased until Wednesday. Also he said there is a possibility it could affect air travel for weeks.

With all the flight restrictions today I,m looking forward to a busy day of general aviation from Shoreham,Redhill and Biggin Hill airports rather than same old Gatwick and Heathrow.

Morning all. Tailwinds, you are absolutely right about Radarbox addiction! During a phonecall i`ve just had with a friend - who shall remain unidentified for reasons of total insanity, he mentioned that he has been reduced to playing that 30 minute stop frame clip from Radarbox i put on You Tube a few weeks back as he misses his Radarbox viewing so much! I thought he was joking! Well, he`s NOT and he HAS - still falling about here, don`t know whether to laugh or cry!!

What are these tests looking for and how are they conducted? Anyone know? I think Lufthansa have been running a 'test' as well but it's difficult to envisage what their trying to do.

Thanks for that Hans. Just heard an interesting (and a bit more serious) discussion on the BBC about these tests and the situation in general.
Apparently as a result of tests so far no immediate damage to the engines has been observed although there is a question mark over longer term damage to the engines that could result in substantially higher fuel consumption for the life of an engine.
A debate is also opening up about at what stage an acknowledged dangerous plume of ash becomes sufficiently less dense as to no longer to constitute a threat.
We are very short of knowledge in this area.
It was also anticipated that as as no changes in the weather pattern are expected in the next five days, the embargo will remain in place next week.

Yes, Lasham is best known as a gliding field, but for many years it has also been the home of a succession of companies doing heavy and line maintenance on airliners, based at the former Dan-Air facility.
Latest incumbents, since 1995, are ATC Lasham, see www.atclasham.co.uk

No idea if it will work, and no way of testing it :-(

I have no doubt that the pressure is really starting to tell and the airlines, and their governments, are investigating any and all possible escape routes from this blocade.
The prospect of being stuck in this situation for what could be months is clearly focussing minds on finding a solution - fast.

BBC news says that airlines are looking for a way out and want restrictions re-considered and relaxed. They're testing the envelope all over Europe from the sound of it and collecting data. Must be all working together.

There may be some ad hoc relaxations of restrictions going on to allow airline repositioning but I doubt very much if any passengers will be permitted on board.
On the other hand perhaps passengers could be brought into southern europe - Italy/spain etc and then overland or ferry from there.
It would seem that there are moves afoot to break the embargo.

ANS providers (Eurocontrol, NATS, etc) cannot "close" airspace (that can only be done by the governments concerned).
The situation is that the ANSPs have stated that they will not provide an ATS service in controlled airspace, which effectively means that commercial flights are not feasible because separation cannot be guaranteed. That doesn't stop individual airlines taking the initiative themselves, as we are now seeing.

Paris - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) sharply criticized European governments for their lack of leadership in handling airspace restrictions in light of the Icelandic volcano eruption and urged a re-think of the decision-making process.
“We are far enough into this crisis to express our dissatisfaction on how governments have managed it - with no risk assessment, no consultation, no coordination, and no leadership. This crisis is costing airlines at least $200 million a day in lost revenues and the European economy is suffering billions of dollars in lost business. In the face of such dire economic consequences, it is incredible that Europe’s transport ministers have taken five days to organize a teleconference,” said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s Director General and CEO.
“Governments must place greater urgency and focus on how and when we can safely re-open Europe’s skies. This means decisions based on risk-management, facts and utilizing operational procedures that maintain safety,” said Bisignani.
IATA criticized Europe’s unique methodology of closing airspace based on theoretical modeling of the ash cloud. “This means that governments have not taken their responsibility to make clear decisions based on facts. Instead, it has been the air navigation service providers who announced that they would not provide service. And these decisions have been taken without adequately consulting the airlines. This is not an acceptable system particularly when the consequences for safety and the economy are so large,” said Bisignani.
“Safety is our top priority. Airlines will not fly if it is not safe. I have consulted our member airlines that normally operate in the affected airspace. They report missed opportunities to fly safely. The European system results in blanket closures of airspace. I challenge governments to agree on ways to flexibly re-open airspace. Risk assessments should be able to help us re-open certain corridors, if not entire airspaces,” said Bisignani.
To assist governments in assessing risk, airlines have conducted successful test flights in several European countries. The results have not shown any irregularities or safety issues. Airlines are also exploring various operational measures to maintain safe operations. These include day flights, restrictions to specific flight corridors, special climb and descent procedures, and more frequent detailed boroscopic engine inspections to detect damage.
The scale of airspace closures currently seen in Europe is unprecedented. “We have seen volcanic activity in many parts of the world but rarely has it resulted in airspace closures - and never at this scale. When Mount St. Helens erupted in the US in 1980, we did not see large scale disruptions, because the decisions to open or close airspace were risk managed with no compromise on safety,” said Bisignani, who urged Eurocontrol to establish a volcano contingency centre capable of making coordinated decisions.
Bisignani called for an urgent meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the specialized agency of the UN, to define government responsibility for the decisions to open or close airspace in a coordinated and effective way based on real data and special operating procedures.

Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Monday April 19, 1530
The volcanic eruption has reduced and the volcano is not currently emitting ash to altitudes that will affect the UK. Assuming there are no further significant ash emissions we are now looking at a continuously improving situation.
Based on the latest information from the Met Office, NATS advises that the restrictions currently in place across UK controlled airspace will remain in place until 0700 (local time) tomorrow, Tuesday.
From 0700 (local time) tomorrow, Tuesday, Scottish airspace will be open, and south to a line between Teesside and Blackpool. Mainland Scottish airports will be open.
This is a dynamic and changing situation and is therefore difficult to forecast beyond 0700 local; however, the latest Met Office advice is that the contaminated area will continue to move south with the possibility that restrictions to airspace above England and Wales, including the London area, may be lifted later tomorrow (Tuesday).
We will continue to monitor Met Office information and review our arrangements in line with that. We will advise further arrangements at approximately 2100 (local time), today.
It is now for airports and airlines to decide how best to utilise this opportunity. Passengers should contact their airlines to find out how this will affect their travel plans.

I do hope NATS aren't bowing into pressure from the Airlines who are obviously desperate to get business going again! They have been accused of taking 'Draconian Measures' and perhaps being 'Overly Cautious'. Better to be safe than sorry in my view.

I think pressure from the airlines will have played some small part in the decision making process. I just hope it doesn't come back to haunt us!

Something doesn’t seem right here. The Met Office maps covering from 1800 yesterday ‘til 1200 today show the predicted affected areas as big as, if not bigger than they have been previously. Especially over and around the UK.
What I don't understand is how The Authorities’ know that the ‘actual’ and 24 hour prediction maps are anywhere near accurate? We are told that the fine ash capable of causing engine damage is generally not visible even when flown into. I can see that sensors on Environmental Research planes could detect it but can’t get my head around how they can have so many covering the vast areas shown on the maps. There is also the question of upper and lower levels of the ash clouds. How can they ascertain these over the whole periphery and anywhere within these massive areas to determine if there are safe routes through them?
Perhaps Dave or others with ATC or meteorological experience can explain how the information is gathered and just how accurate it is considered to be.
From the pictures of the F18 engines, it seems obvious that no matter how many test flights BA, Lufthansa, KLM etc have flown which show no signs of damage, until the Met Office, NATS, Eurocontrol etc are certain that there is no ash in the atmosphere through which commercial flights could be flying, all airspace that could possibly be affected should remain closed.

On a slightly different tack, I just hope that the various authorities and operatives at the airports themselves get well-geared up to move things along quickly.
How stupid it would be to have limited windows of opportunity lost because they're not up to speed. Passengers in the dark, check-ins undermanned, baggage clog-ups, immigration at a crawl and the myriad of other things that can make flying such a pain in the proverbial.

Here's a quick question...apart from 'possible' damage being done to the engines, what's the possibility that the pitot tubes and other sensors could get 'clogged' up thus giving false readings??
If that was the case just think what could happen on a night flight without the vital gauges working correctly.

Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Monday April 19, 2200
Since our last statement at 1530 today, the volcano eruption in Iceland has strengthened and a new ash cloud is spreading south and east towards the UK. This demonstrates the dynamic and rapidly changing conditions in which we are working.
Latest information from the Met Office shows that the situation is worsening in some areas. Based on this information, the situation for Northern Irish airports for the morning is uncertain, due to the new ash cloud. The latest information shows that Scottish airports should be available from 0700 and more airspace over England may become available from 1300 although not as far south as the main London airports.
We will continue to monitor Met Office information and the situation is likely to change overnight. We will make a further statement at approximately 0300 (local time), tomorrow, Tuesday 20 April and again at 0900 (local time).
NATS is maintaining close dialogue with the Met Office and with the UK's safety regulator, the CAA, in respect of the international civil aviation policy we follow in applying restrictions to use of airspace.
We are working closely with Government, airports and airlines, and airframe and aero engine manufacturers to get a better understanding of the effects of the ash cloud and to seek solutions.

I didn't even think of this aspect of things. Over my chunk of Canada, I normally see tons and tons and tons of transoceanic aircraft, despite the fact I'm very firmly landlocked in the middle of the country.
From 0000 to 2359Z on 4/19, there were only four non-North American aircraft registered on my log:
EVA698, B-16483, a B744 doing an EVA Cargo run.
KAL239/240, HL7608, a B744 doing a pair of Korean Air Cargo trips.
AFL321, VP-BAX, an Aeroflot B763.
And VP-CNI, not providing any details at all.

There are many flights over France and the Netherlands this morning and as you say Roland28, there are many flights 'skirting' UK airspace over the channel obviously without problems. NATS are obviously heavily reliant on the Met office and what they are telling them BUT I don't think the Met Office's ability to track the danger is nearly accurate enough and although talking from a laymen's point of view, I don't think a 'blanket shutdown' of UK airspace has probably been necassary all this time.

Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Tuesday April 20, 1500
The situation regarding the volcanic eruption in Iceland remains dynamic and the latest information from the Met Office shows that the situation will continue to be variable.
Based on the latest Met Office information, part of Scottish and Northern Irish airspace including Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh airports will continue to be available from 1900 today to 0100 tomorrow, Wednesday 21 April, and also south to Newcastle Airport. Glasgow and Teesside airports will additionally become available in this time period. Restrictions will remain in place over the rest of UK airspace below 20,000ft.
Flights above the ash cloud are now permitted in the UK; between 1900 today and 0100 tomorrow, this will enable aircraft movements above 20,000ft in UK airspace.
We will continue to monitor Met Office information and the situation is likely to change during the course of the day. We will make a further statement at approximately 2100 today.

Those Luton flights were non-revenue positioning flights. There's no way an airliner with pax on board would be allowed in the Heathrow zone at present.

So, reported on the news that BA expect to land their aircraft at a London airport. First one to watch is probably BAW124, just about to cross the channel.

Hopfully this will be sorted soon not only because we cant see planes on our radarbox but also the scottish "government " has decided to (at short notice) to remove the MV Hamavoe from the stromness scrabster route to take some tourists from Norway back to the UK and also the shetland to Aberdeen sailing won't go past kirkwall until the airspace is open so now there is not only limited flights but also a limited ferry service with only pentland ferries (relatively) small boat going between orkney and scotland and nothing going to be going (air or sea) to shetland.
At least we have had some non private flights logged although the ash forcast isn't looking too good yet.

There is currently a BA aircraft on 129.1 (missed his call sign poss BA074) says he can hold for up to 3hrs as he has been told there are negotiations currently going on behind the scenes to allow him & possibly others to land at LHR.

There is currently a BA aircraft on 129.1 (missed his call sign poss BA074) says he can hold for up to 3hrs as he has been told there are negotiations currently going on behind the scenes to allow him & possibly others to land at LHR.

As a previous poster alluded to, if you have sufficient fuel reserves then there is nothing to lose by holding for a couple of hours if there is even a slim chance that the policy will shift and allow landings at LHR.

It's crazy!! The Easyjet went upto 28,000 over Liverpool, turned and dropped back into Luton. Why couldn't BAW102 drop down into Heathrow?

All UK Airports to reopen from 10.00pm tonight according to Sky. The pressure of so many flights in the air may be the reasoon as much as Sky's reporter saying there is very little ash now from the volcano. Facinating night i thought there was afootball match on the box as well.

All UK airports can reopen from 2200 BST on Tuesday, the Transport Secretary Lord Adonis has said.
He added that after the ban was lifted it would be up to airlines to bring flight schedules back on track.
The statement was delivered after consultation with the Civil Aviation Authority and a reassessment of the risk to aircraft from volcanic ash.
Some restrictions will remain in place, but they will be much smaller than those enforced under the current ban.

What a tremendous night. I doubt we will see anything like this again (well, I hope not!).
It is interesting that non of the TV media following the first flights in to LHR mention the 'smell of burning' between 5K and 6K ft. Has he media been suppressed?

I personally heard 2 flights report that on my scanner. Doubtless it will get into the media reports. Maybe the nervous passengers decided to have a fag !

The smell must have been either ash or burning from within the aircraft, if The Sun got hold of it they might sensationalise it but the crew report was not made in this way, although they hot footed it back to Manchester and said they didn't want to hang around in a hold. I've got the radio transmissions if anyone wants to listen.

It's not unknown for an engine oil seal to fail, which results in an intense smell (of burnt oil) and sometimes mist/smoke in the cabin.
The BAe 146 and Boeing 757 are, allegedly, more prone than most types to this kind of incident, in fact an Australian flight attendant on 146s has recently been awarded substantial damages against East-West Airlines for respiratory illness attributed to toxic fumes in cabin.

Thomas Cook are now back-pedalling furiously and saying that the incident was simply an air-conditioning fault, not related to the ash.

The mainstream media seem to think that the volcanic dust problem is over, but it's not. Looking at the latest VAAC charts (http://metoffice.com/aviation/vaac/data/VAG_1272000045.png), we're still under the volcanic ash, and several UK airports are still closed, including my own local airport Inverness.
It's having a significant impact, particularly on the UK oil industry, with workers unable to get to and from the platforms. And vital links between the Highlands and Islands are still severly disrupted, and we're not just talking about holidaymakers unable to get home, but people unable to get to hospital for vital operations.
