F15 Eagles and Mode-S

This weeks been a busy week for F15's. I've had 20 so far and after searching the web and some eductated guesswork this is what I have come up with can anyone confirm any of the following please. They appear to be allocated in blocks by Sqn not serial No.

Are the above confirmed as EGNX has listed. I am getting lots of US Mil with no serial numbers, just the Mode S Codes. Is there a list anywhere.

Hello Malcdee,

The above list is partially correct. The F-15's are now appearing on GAS but there seems to be a lot of confusion still. The mode-s group on yahoo is quite usefull. Also over the last week or so they seem to have been using a whole differant set of hex codes. I'll post a revised list of what I have shortly.

Hi all,
Some aircraft have appeared on the same day using one code in the morning and a different one in the afternoon. I have 60 separate codes listed and due to the confusion over which carries what It may be impossible to fully make an accurate tie-up as they may continue with tactical coding as is done by the German Air foce CL60's

No it appear not. They are changeable, whether that is from the cockpit or by engineers I dont know. However the fact that they can go up twice in one day with different codes I have to assume it is within the pilots control.

Funny that. Even when you have iff and the pilot has to set a code, there is still another code that the crew do not have access to.

Thought it would have been the same.

Fancy letting aircrew have access to something that they can change!!!

Reading between the lines, it could be worse. 

Firstly, the ban on changing codes in mid-flight would suggest that there isn't any provision for the pilot changing the code, i.e. it can only be done by an avionics techie on the ground between missions.  Having said that, if it emerges that the F-15 has dual Mode S transponders, then presumably each could be programmed with a different code and the pilot would be able to select between the two, although again not in flight according to the rules.

Secondly, and more importantly, I think I'm right in saying that there are no recorded instances of the same code being used by more than one aircraft (as opposed to vice versa).  If that turns out to be the case, it's the same setup as with the GAF Challengers, where there appears to be a pool of codes available for use but, once a code has been used it will never be re-used on a different aircraft.

In other words, once you have tied up a code to an airframe, picking up the same code in future will mean the same airframe.

Just a theory, I stand to be corrected.

It's interesting that Eurocontrol have seen the need to issue this advisory.  This might suggest that there have been cases of ModeS codes being assigned to more than one aircraft at the same time.

I'd be happy if they just assigned a code to all their aircraft.  So many Tornado GR4s have no ModeS capability anyway!!
