Airnav Ranges
« on: June 24, 2012, 01:56:05 AM »
Good evening currently from my location
In orpington I'm getting the following ranges
Orpington is 16 miles from london
To the north as far as nothampton
To the east  southend
To the west newbury
To the south rouen in france
I get around 90 aircraft on my screen
I run a outdoor aieral
Question 1090 band does the weather affect range
High and low pressure
My range is about 150 to 170 miles

It certainly will. Thick cloud, heavy rain, ice and snow will all attenuate the signal.

Yup... makes a huge difference. Anywhere from 900 to 2000 logs dependant on the weather. On a good day i get to LFRC  (Cherbourg) from Tenby, Wales. So many variables at 1090Mhz. Cheers

Difficult to compare ranges when there are so many individual factors to consider. Very dependent on aerial height and obstacles surrounding your site.

Good high pressure areas sometime produce lift and exceptionally heavy rain/snow can reduce range but in general weather is not a factor - the signal is line of sight.

This site may give you advance notice of when conditions are optimum:
