Propogation down today?
« on: October 20, 2009, 07:45:35 AM »
The propogation seems well down today here in east midlands. Struggling to hit 100nm let alone my standard 150nm.

Anyone else down or is it a local phenomenon?

Morning Bratters, propo normal here in Pontefract with one flight reaching dutch coast. Not so hot any other direction as normal here. Get 75 miles to west (Pennines blocking) and about 90 miles north and south which are occluded directions. Using standard curlywhirly antenna with 50 feet decent coax at about 25 feet with no preamp. Hope things improve for you. Bi now, Roger

Morning Roger - I've got a nice run south and specifically southeast which gets me into the Antwerp/Rotterdam area when things are favourable at around 170/180nm.
Normal conditions would bring in the channel traffic between IOW and the Dover straits at around 130/140 nm. Struggling today to reach south coast.

North is not so clever with a combination of buildings, trees, Peak District and Pennines although there is a very narrow slot slot which pulls in signals from just short of Carlisle area at over 130nm.

All this from the bog standard supplied aerial currently perched on the upper south facing window sill outside. To switch to the north facing sill on the other side of the house, I use an extended USB rather than an aerial extension lead. Works a treat, quick and easy.

Will have consider a roof mounting alongside my discone but it's more money and I'm not sure it's worth it.

Hi Bratters, thanks for info. Been considering putting a discone up on the tower but the location here plus the added length of coax may not improve things much. Already got a load of junk on the tower - am operational from 6 metres to 23 cems as radio ham. PS take a look at the other reply about propgation that quoted ducting to the southeast - some stuff on that site may interest you.
