25-1300Mhz antenna for radarbox?
« on: June 13, 2009, 01:57:10 PM »
hi, i want an aerial that does both airband and the radarbox.

i was looking at the D-130 Super Discone Antenna.
Specs:

25 to 1300MHz for receiving - 50/144/430/904/1200MHz for transmitting

Specifications
Max. diameter:    84cm
Mast diameter accepted:    25mm to 50mm
Max power rating:    20W (50MHz) / 200W (more than 140MHz)
Length:    1.7m

Would this work on the radarbox, i know it is probably better getting an antenna that is tuned for 1090mhz but would this be better than the suppleid antenna?

It will, no doubt, atcukmatty. I'm using a simlar (Sirio N2000) alternatively to a Wimo 1090. No significant difference.

Expect you to run it outside. Feed it with it with a low loss!!! coax, not to exeed ~ 10-12 meters, and get it up "as high and free" as you can.
Never connect the Airband Scanner in parallel to it (by means of a "T-piece") as that will at least degrade the RBs operation. (by what is called "impedance mismatch") You might use a "power- / signal splitter" to separate both units from each other.
The antenna is designed for outside operation, the default antenna is NOT.

i tried my royal when i first got the box it was very poor compared with the supplied  aerial even with the supplied one at about 5 ft off the ground it out performed the discone dramatically
cheers paul
ps now run the wimo 1090 much better

Any  wideband/multiband   antenna - discone or otherwise is going to be a compromise and is unlikely to outperform an antenna  cut for a specific frequency.
