Hi
According to the site
http://www.ocarc.ca/coax.htm

With only 3 meters of the original RG174 cable we are loosing around 50%!

Regretfully YES

Its only advantage is
relatively cheap, very flexible, very small bending radius,
squeezing by any windowseals
and that is it then

Have a look at this comparing table

This is all too much for me.

Are we saying that RG174 is the cable that is supplied with the RB and basically the cable looses most of the signal?

If so what are the best solutions for external aerials?

Best bet for external antennae with any reasonable length of feeder: Westfex 103, Ecoflex 15, LMR or Heliax

Thanks Chris

Just ordered an extender with the telescopic mast and not sure if cable is supplied. This thread was quite timely.

Did you order the kit with all of the leads? if it's from W&S they do a 10 or 20M run of Westflex option which is not a bad deal because the connectors alone are 7 quid a piece.

@marcdeklerk  - are you running the LMR1200 to a bias-tee? I take it that it's not going straight into the back of the RB :)

malc, you can normally buy runs of cable already made up unless you fancy doing it yourself. Westflex isn't too bad to work with providing you know the cutting dimensions for the various types of connector.

Hi dor4x,

Just for interest if you can get your standard aerial out in the clear it can give some good results.
Screen shot 1 is the standard aerial at roof hieght externally at the full reach of the cable.
Screen shot 2 is my 1105c in the same location but 3ft higher.
The standard has better range and if I could make it permanant without the radarbox being in the loft I would. So I just use the origional aerial for going mobile which means I can keep the radarbox in the same room as the laptop for easy access.

From all the posts I've read its all a trade off between Location, height, obsticles in line of site and how much your prepared to spend while walking through the minefield of which aerial and cable combination to go for. Good Luck;-)

Totally agree, with the aerial on top of the car a short distance from home, the results are excellent.
