Hi,

What exactly does the QNH entry do in the preferences? Is it automatically updated?

The QHN you have set affects the indicated altitude altitude when below the level you have set for the Transition Level (above which Flight Levels are used).  You can either listen to ATC at a nearby airfiield and set the figure manually, or if you are connected to the Internet, put the code for that airport in the SmartView window and make sure you have "Autoset QNH" ticked.

Look at Wikipedia for details regarding QHN and its use.

Just set my local airport in Smartview. Does this QNH setting over-rule the standard 1013 setting in prefrences?
Wondered why the planes look about 1000ft out. Now all sorted

Hi E14

We are experiencing a period of low pressure at the moment.  I'm guessing your local QNH is 982mb.  If an aircraft is indicating 2500' on 982mb it would be indicating 930' higher on 1013mb.  This ties in neatly with the 1000' difference you were seeing.

Cheers for that Keith. Ive set EGLC in smartview and FL's seem more feasible now.
I guess the setting in Smartview is the master setting for QNH.

Have you also set the transition level (6000' at City)?  If so you will notice that aircraft indicate feet above mean sea level below 6000' and flight levels above the transition level.  If you are getting the EGLC METARS in Smartview (and have autoset QNH checked) you will see altitudes indicated correctly at your location.
