Sharing RB on home network - is this possible?
« on: July 16, 2008, 09:13:28 PM »
Hello...it's me again...

Gonna get me a RadarBox after the weekend - just need to decide where to buy from as I would like an antenna with mine! :-)

<ducking>

Anyway...back to my question...on my home network I have 4 machines hardwired;

Server 2003 rack-mounted in the loft
W2K workstation that I intended to phase out a couple of years ago(!) in my office
WinXP workstation  that I have earmarked for direct connection to the RB also in the office
XP Media Center in the bedroom

In addition I have wireless connections for 3-4 resident laptops;

2 x Sony VAIO laptops running Vista (ugh) downstairs
WinXP TabletPC used mainly for work but used anywhere in the house
Old W2K laptop used mainly with my telescope and at the dinner table(!)

Although I can access any machine on my network locally from any other and also access them remotely when I am away it would be good to access the RB directly from any of these computers as using RDP sometimes limits screen refresh rates, response times etc.

As I would also like to locate the RB in the loft out of the way and close to an external antenna is it possible to install the RB software onto more than one PC (licensing restrictions?) and access it directly over the network?

I am guessing not out of the box so additional hardware would probably be required...

Also can RB sustain more than a single connection at any time?

The ethernet port (and the scanner interface) were the main things the SBS-1 offered that the RB didn't so is there a work-round?

Do any of you have the RB software installed on more than one computer and are there any 'gotchas' to using it in this way?

Thanks & regards,
-=Glyn=-

As besty says Windows Remote Desktop works the best. The updates on the screen won't really be faster than half a second so with Remote Desktop there is little difference noticed.

You can install the RadarBox software on different computers but it will only have one connection with a RadarBox.

We have heard some customers have used Wireless USB hubs but we have never tested nor confirmed from customers that they work perfectly.

Thanks for the reply besty,

I realise I could probably access it via RDP but wondered whether it was possible to access it directly across the network - maybe in a similar way to how Internet Connection Sharing works or better still via Ethernet so I could leave it on 24/7 on my main machine but run the software on another PC and connect that way?

Concurrent connection or multi-user access maybe?

Don't think it sounds possible out of the box but maybe some enterprising soul here has found a way to do this...I see references to a USB->Ethernet adaptor...does anyone here run a similar setup?

Hey AirNav - Ethernet add-on possibly? ;^)

Thanks & regards,

As far as I know you only have 1 login so would that not stop it from being logged onto 2 machines at once, don't know if I'm right but seems to make sense.

Hi AirNav support...just seen your reply as I posted...thanks.

Looks like it will have to be RDP/RDC then...I use it regularly here to access all my other computers and connect to customers systems and although it works reasonably well it is not perfect.

Anyway could be placing an order for two RadarBoxes if my mate really is serious...

Thanks & regards,

You could have a look at this thread, not sure if it tells you anything different.

Saw that thread thanks besty and a Cat5 solution would work well for me as I have a 16 port Gigabit switch in my rack in the loft!

Thanks & regards,
