by the way on this recorder feature. would it be possible to specify a time(ideally I would  also like to be able to look for a specific aircraft/flight id)  for starting the playback file ? For example if I am interested in seeing the traffic around midnight but I start the recorder around 1700,  I have to run the player for 7 hours before seeing it . Not very convenient you can admit!

Yes - a fast forward/rewind and a goto time would be good.

Also how about allowing alerts to trigger recording - perhaps specifying how long the recording should last?

Not quite the answer you are looking for, but it is possible to open the .rbl recordings with Notepad and just copy/paste/delete to get the bit you are interested in.  You can even search in Notepad to help you find the aircraft.

The time format is:

YYYYMMDDHHMMSS - and a few more fractions of a second I guess
