How do you determine the difference between a decoding error and a miscode?
You asked me that question back as we started with the db updaters volunteer team and db update request threads. Must be two years ago or so...
But concidering my own swiss cheese memory, here we go again:
confirmed decoding error:
Standard procedure for all unknown airframes with flight id:
- unknown airframe with flight id received.
- checking if flight id is in the list with other known airframe
If yes:
- check reception time of known and unknown airframe
- if position data of unknown and known airframe is available compare both
- using libhomeradar and flightradar24 to see if known aiframe has performed that flight today
- checking the difference in hex code
If reception time is nearly identical and position data is almost in on one line and the known airframe has according the the mentioned two sites performed this flight, I concider the unknown airframe a confirmed decoding error especially if the hex differs in only one digit.
In all other cases I would state, that I can't tell if it's a decoding error or a miscoded airframe. Especially if I haven't received the correct hex for a while, but the new hex several times in the past few weeks.
Of course it presumes, that the pilot hasn't deliberately entered a misleading flight id.
