Long term support
« on: December 29, 2012, 09:30:20 PM »
I am impressed by the development.  However, can Dev state how they will support the App long term.  The side views of airliners that are appearing in the App in airline colour schemes are impressive if limited considering the worldwide coverage of the product.  But will it be like the launch of Airnav 3D, where they had a representative few hundred liveries (skins), but not a single skin has been released in the two years since.  If you want a 3D skin for a Korean Airlines A388 or any B788, there is zero chance of getting that from Airnav.  How will airnav add to the representative side views currently available to show a full set that is constantly added too as new types come on line with the world airlines.

Will it be the same for RB24, in two years it will only be representative legacy aircraft liveries that show and every new type or rebranded airline will only show the greyed out silhouette.

What is your five-year in-company plan for supporting the changes required for this App or will it be the same nil/volunteer support that has been the case for the long-term sustainment of your other products.

Probably it’s a good idea here to create new side views or 3D liveries ourselves and send it to AirNav?

I do it for a long time and really enjoy AirNav support in this.  At least two dozens of new side views for Russian carriers were displayed in the past week on RB24. And the delay between my sending and displaying is just a few hours.

I am working right now on the next package.

As I suspected more goodwill and volunteer support required to sustain this long term.  I still worry about the lack of a five year plan for in-house support of any Airnav product.

Looking back - I shouldn't have asked this question.  Airnav were quite firm in February 2011 that for the data contained in the product, they will not provide any company support, in toto, after initial launch.

silhouettes, airline logos, outlines have always been developed by our users and we helped them adding these features to the main software improving, as an example the airline logo identification routine several times as per our users request. There are things that are much better done by end users taking in account that we will do anything possible to accommodate users requests for these features.

There are hundreds of examples of this on the tech community: 99.9% of browser addons are developed by end users. Themes are usually developed by end users, etc, etc.

This has nothing to with software development, database integration, server optimization: those are things that are and will ever be done by us.
