Ironiser !!!!
« on: January 06, 2012, 09:11:48 AM »
Just been reading through the forum re: loss of range, thought it may be the ariel as I have had the unit a few years now, but just realised that there is an ironiser plugged in not far from me in the office where I have the RB set up.

I believe these work by firing static charges into the air, if this is so, it must be  the culprit and need to take the unit in to be "cleaned up".
Apologies if this is obvious to the more technically minded, but just wanted it confirmed.

Hi Oliver, very unlikely to be the source of the problem. Just turn the ioniser off for ten minutes and see if anything changes!
ANRB :  AOR AR8000 : Icom R-7000 : Icom IC-R9000 : JRC NRD-545 : OptoElectronics Digital Scout and OptoLinx Interface; Realistic Pro-2005 : UBC 800XLT - listed in alphabetical order, not cost, preference, performance or entertainment value!

Thanks for your reply, glad to hear that, I do like leaving it running at work to catch military stuff coming through the Lichfield radar corridor, I will try turning it off next week, I was just worried in case it had damaged the unit, I am running it from home now, and the range seems ok.

I have had the unit for about 3 years now, so maybe a new ariel is in order, the current one is well travelled and is a bit twisted in places,  thanks again for your reply.

Not wanting to start another loss of range thread, but just thought I would update, I took it to the highest hill in the vicinity lunchtime and got 13 flights, longest range of 50 miles, I always get at least 120 - 150 flights up there, with a range of up to 200 miles ,everything between Heathrow and Liverpool.

Going to buy a new standard ariel and see if that cures it, will let you know.

Hi Oliver, if another antenna doesn't dramatically improve things, get a repair request going through Waters and Stanton off this site.

Just to update, I have tried a new ariel, and the range is still well down on what it should be.

Is there a particular procedure to follow to request repair by Waters and Stanton, or do I just contact them direct ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Just been reading the FAQ section regarding static problems in early models, my serial number is ANRB00949 so I think this is one of them, how do I go about getting a repair please, Airnav ?

thanks.

Hi Oliver, I assume from your last post that this is not a new unit (did you buy it 2nd hand?), in which case the 2 years warranty period may be up.  Pack it securely and post (Rec./Special Delivery) to Waters & Stanton PLC, Spa House, 22 Main Road, Hockley, Essex. SS5 4QS. UK. Tel +44(0)1702 206835.

Hi Oliver, in that case, can I safely take it that you've had the unit for more than 2 years and that it is quite an early unit.   If that is the case, Air Nav have very fairly and generously stated they will carry out repairs Free Of Charge to old units which are outside the warranty period.
