ICAO
« on: March 16, 2008, 12:41:57 AM »
Hi all

A couple of questions please to a newbie RadarBox owner.
Is it possible somewhere in the program to convert the short ICAO (i think) to the long version.  Or at least have the choice. Because i don't know what places the codes refer to.  I guess i could find a list somewhere.

In the dropdown menu to locate an airport i tried EGCN and couldn't find it (think its Doncaster) I am using the supplied maps.

Wondered if anyone had an up-to-date uk map especially for Airnav please with all the airport loops etc?

Also in My Log in the Routes column is there a way to convert the ICAO to the long version?

Thanks

Just to clarify for each airport (almost all) there is a:
IATA 3 letter Code, eg LHR
ICAO 4 letter Code, eg EGLL

In RadarBox closed to airport input boxes there is a button with a "..." caption.
If you click there and type the name of the city/airport it will get the code for you. Also you can do this in the File menu, Database Explorer, Airports table where all the airports and their details are stored.

Also have a look here:

Thanks Airnav Developement.  Yes i did look there but there are many airports missing.

I tried a search for Luton Airport - nothing found.  Also for Doncaster - nothing found also  Sheffield - nothing found.

Could you please tell me Is it possible to have the option to convert the 4 letter ICAO code to full title eg. Manchester International.

Mainly for the MyLog as I like to look at Routes etc.

Thanks

Now that is not possible but we have just added it to the wish list.

For Luton, did you try to find "London"...I believe it is stored as London Luton.

Have a look at this interesting page:

Hello AirNav Development.

Thanks for the wish list addition.  Yes i did try London Luton and was found.  Still Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster was not available and also Sheffield City Airport.

Could these be added to the database please?
Thanks

They are there I'm sure but with another name.

Our database got updated from the latest AIRAC cycle. These are official cycles developed for commercial aviation each 28 days. I will have a look at it.

Hey Roadrunner.

I was based at Finningley for 6 years when i was in RAF. Its a pitty it closed down.  Been back a few months ago and its not recognisable as a military establishment anymore with it changing to a civil airport.

The correct name for it now is Robin Hood Airport Doncaster/Nottingham.

Thanks

Then there is Durham Tees Valley airport - nowhere near Valley and not that close to Durham :-)

Kent International also makes me laugh - good old RAF Manston.

Hi Bigyun.

The last time I was at Finningley was for a B-O-B air display and the highlight was watching 6 Vulcan bombers do a streamed take off. To say it was awesome is an understatement. I cant remember the date but would have been early seventies and I dont get out to shows as much these days :-(

EGCN is in fact Robin Hood, what makes me laugh is what had Robin Hood to do with Doncaster or Sheffied?

Its for the tourists :-0 [ a ploy to get them to go there and perhaps the area has no heros of its own so why not nick one from a few miles away :-)

RAF Finningly was actually on loan from the Nottinghamshire National Coal Board.  NNCB actually owned the land as many of their coalfaces/shafts were underneath the runway hence a little uneven due to very slight subsidence.

One of the longest runways in the country as it was a Master Diversionary Airfield.  During winter i was one of the people who had to clear the runway from snow & ice, so been up and down it hundreds of times.

Anyway a little history for you.  Thats why its called Robin Hood Doncaster/Nottingham.

EGCN is not in my airfield database.

Cheers
