Suddenly range is down to max. 5 NM - Box is broken?
« on: September 18, 2010, 06:51:13 AM »
Hello,

the reception of my radarbox is very bad since today. I only get the planes that are within about 0 to max. 5 NM. Until last week I could see planes up to over 100 NM.
I am using the antenna I got with the radarbox.

Is it possible that the radarbox is broken?
I thought, if its broken, I should not receive any signals....
Maybe the cable to the antenna is the problem. Unfortunately I have no other antenna to test.

What should I do? Send it back to Airnav?
Do you have any Idea?

Thanks

I would contact Airnav support directly and discuss matters with them.

Mike, I had this problem once and discovered I had not connected the aerial cable into the box correctly. Make sure the centre wire is fully in. No doubt you have tried this but I thought I would pass on my experience with it.
So many trails not enough time!

Mike

Numerous treads on this in the past but a common problem has been the connection in the base of the aerial.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the answers!
The antenna cable is correctly connected to the box, thats for sure!

What do you exactly mean with
"a common problem has been the connection in the base of the aerial" ?

Is there a method to solve? do I have to dissamble the base of the antenna and verify the connections of the wire to base?

Thanks

Mike, look at the connection to the radarbox.  There should be a short length of copper wire which takes the signal into the unit.  On some occasions this short length of wire some how slips back into the sheath leaving the cable unable to make contact with the unit.

There are previous examples of this on the forum.

Hello Runway 31
thank for the tip, but I cannot find any other messages about this in the forum.
Can you send me a link to the correct topic?
You are writing about a piece of copper wire. Should I open up the box to see the wire that you mean? Do you mean the wire connectiong the antenna connexion to the mainplate?
Regards
Mike

Mike,

Do not open up the box.

Unscrew the antenna from the box.  Look inside the brass connector of the antenna cable and their should be short length of copper cable sticking out of the centre of the white insulator.

Also contact support directly for their assistance and advice.  mailto:  [email protected]

Classic symptoms of front end filter damaged. Return box to supplier for repair or ask for instructions for repair from Airnav. Two year warranty incidentally.

Am I correct in saying that if you have one of the early batches, identified by serial number, it is a life time guarantee.

I think I'm right in saying that the unlimited guarantee on the early boxes applies specifically to damage to the front end filters, not the box as a whole.

You need Airnav confirmation on this.

Hello

I checked the antenna connexion, it's OK!

It really seems that the box is not working well any more.
I already contacted AIRNAV, I will have to send the box back for repair.

Thank you all for your support!
