The radio exchanges between the bombing range controllers and the French pilots is hilarious - "do you have facility for guns"........."pardon?".........."have you got a gun?!!!!"

Yep, done that one with the USAF - many years ago.

"XXXXXX squawk standby"

"Say again sir"

"XXXXXX squawk standby"

"Say again sir"

"Strangle the parrot"

"Ahh, Roger Sir, squawk going off"

Shame the Boss was standing behind me and only heard my last transmission. Cue the debrief about using standard phraseology!

Does this aircraft make a regular appearance around these skies?

ASTOR is Airborne Stand-off Radar - battlefield surveillance - the equivalent of the US JSTARS Boeings. 5 Squadron will be getting 5 of them - eventually. They were all due to be in service by September 2005, but the last one, currently being fitted out by Raytheon at Broughton, won't be up and running until December this year.

Well, you did ask!

'Metman' visited Shannon today. It's due to make a 4hr oceanic flight later tonight. Interestingly it was the first 146-300.

The bad weather over the UK - except for Shropshire - has resulted in loads of military traffic today.  Here's just one snapshot of the sort of traffic I've been getting today!

See the full MyLog list below - a couple of unknowns there if anybody can help. Note the new C17 too, ZZ175.The aircraft I didn't see in the aircraft list, I've heard on the scanner - what a fun day :-)

This Open Skies Boeing is somewhere within 200 miles of me right now - first time I've noticed it.

On a different scale, here is a genuine Cherokee bumbling along south of Sweden showing full position. Can't find much about it - why would it have full ADS-B?

Dreamlifter passing over Northern England - too far to the north of me for a visual, unfortunately.

Shame about the EIA flight ID - could have glossed over it as a genuine Evergreen freighter!

UPDATE - looks like it's heading for Prestwick.

And another (fairly) interesting one - There are only two Boieng C-32B's - used by the USAF's Foreign Ememgency Support Team, and virtually unmarked so that they can fly into trouble-spots without drawing too much attention to themselves to evacuate US nationals.
