Sharing Network Data
« on: June 07, 2010, 08:52:34 AM »
Hi,

I'm a new user using RadarBox ver4.03 based in Cape Town, South Africa.

I'm tring to share my data to the airnav network, but my site never seems to appear on the RadarBox network locations web page.

I can confirm the following:
. Radar Box hardware is connected and working correctly ( I can track local traffic)
. Share Flight Data is checked
. Firewall is configured to allow outbound traffic to port 7878
. I can see that a network connection is established from my PC to mail.airnavsystems.com:7878
. When there is no local traffic picked up by my hardware in my area I see periodic data packets to the network 57 bytes long
. When there is local traffic picked up by my hardware I see data packets to the network 140 bytes long together with the periodic 57 byte packets.

From the above information, it seems to me that my system is sending data to the radarbox network, however, my station still never shows up on the list and therefore I'm not sure if my local traffic is indeed making it to the network.

Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Ben

Ben,

On network location page it does state

"Note that the locations shown may not be accurate.
Red Positions are extracted from the users location (Town, Country) set in the software. Blue Positions are extracted from the user IP address. Some stations may be missing."

That should explain why your not seeing your location as its trying to get it from your IP and that may not be accurate.

Is the location taken primarily from the IP or users location? When I look at the map it shows one location is South Africa in Johannesburg when I know we have ANRBs in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban as well, all on the network.

I assume ANRB only knows about one city in RSA ;)

BLUE pin = taken from IP address.
RED pin = taken from City/Country entered in users Radarbox preferences.

Most are taken from the IP address because Google Maps times-out when doing lots of location lookups on City/Country.

You can also look at the source of the page, and look at all the geoStuff statements.  Only one I see in South Africa is
geoStuff('Ballito','South Africa',-26.2,28.0833);

What have the end users in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban entered in their Home Location in Radarbox preferences?

If you want to appear on the map, you have to fill in the CITY and COUNTRY boxes in Preferences - Home Station Data.

Only Ballito, South Africa showing as online at the moment:

Interesting. Thanks tarbat
I am always online. My Preferences are set to share data. When I am not at home I un-check "Get Flights from RadarBox Network"
Could be thatthere are long periods of no flights with ADS-B and therefore nothing is being uploaded.

That's a possibility.  Maybe Airnav can confirm this.

EDIT: Confirmed, if you've got no ADS/B aircraft to upload to the network, then you don't appear on the map.  I tested this by unplugging the antenna, and I dissapeared from the network sharing map, even though I've got sharing enabled.  Probably explains other cases of stations not appearing on the map.

AirNav have previously confirmed that only boxes actually sending data are shown on the map, so if it's quiet for aircraft showing position where you are, you won't show up.

Hello

Yes airnav did mention and the map in Europe was extremely sparse during the ashes although I think most of us had our boxes on for the chance of seeing an aircraft.

Sending network traffic 24/7 and I still don't see my location on the map.

I've got :
City = Cape Town
Country = South Africa
Lat = -34.08
Lon = 18.85

Cheers

It's currently in the list - do view source at http://www.airnavsystems.com/RadarBox/network2.php
geoStuff('Cape Town','South Africa',-26.2833,28.05);

In fact, there's 3 stations currently sharing aircraft in South Africa
