USB connection at RadarBox
« on: April 22, 2010, 04:08:15 PM »
Just wondering if anyone can tell me what type of USB connection goes in to the RadarBox. I apologise for posting this as I have seen it somewhere on the forum but can't seem to locate it again using search.

Hello

I believe it is a micro usb and comes with a 6' cable which can be extended.

Hi Andrew

Thanks for that, just I looked at a lead today but it is the USB type A or B (the little square one) so that is no use. I will just buy a USB extension cable for the first few days.

What I used was a very long USB lead with the normal USB connectors, and then got a HAMA Mini USB Adapter B5 to connect to the Radarbox.

It's a 'mini' USB, not a 'micro' USB.

Thanks again for your help guys, I'll go to shop tomorrow and try and get A to mini B USB cable, failing that I'll just get a normal USB extension lead till I can get something ordered from south. Think I'm going down route of longer USB cable with extenders rather than 10-15 metres of coax.

Hi Sandy, I can thoroughly recommend the Active USB extender from www.lindy.com, I've got the 12m one, and since using that definitely get more a/c with my own set up, which I'm sure is due to RB getting full voltage from the extender USB, rather than lap-top.

Thanks for that info CoastGuardJon, are you meaning you are getting better coverage with the active USB? I have ordered an active USB extender from ebay, so hopefully that will be here this week. I have my antenna up the attic just now and borrowed daughters laptop which is sitting below hatch at top of stairs, and I'm sure when I tried non active USB extension (3m) yesterday on my desktop I had a very good range in one direction with antenna just sitting on downstairs window cill (inside) Surely can't be due to laptop as it is running on mains power.

Hi Sandy, I think my range and numbers increased by at least 20%, when I started using the Lindy Active USB extender, and I feel it's most likely due to the RB getting full voltage from the active USB psu, with a lap-top running off the mains, not its battery, this wouldn't be such an issue, if at all.   It is left powered up the whole time, I'm of the opinion that electrical and electronic devices have a longer life, if they're not continually subjected to power off/on surges, TV and other items are always left on standby, I feel the small amount of power consumed is more than balanced out by the extended life and thus less replacement with replacement items which involve the use of more resources and energy.   In Cornwall, we've got dozens of these marvellous wind turbines, which are unbelievably inefficient.   The original manufacture, site preparation, installation and maintenance costs in energy use are massive, they are only able to produce power for 15 - 20% of the time, they take huge amounts of energy off the grid to get them wound up and going round.   Wind power is very expensive per unit (far more than fossil fuel/nuclear power around twice the price), and if it wasn't for the subsidies, no company would be installing them, as they'd lose out hugely.   Turbines are becoming more efficient, but no wind - no power, too much wind - no power.   Nuclear power and energy from waste - bring it on, that's the only way we'll have reliable and afforable power for the next century.   I'll go and put my kevlar armour on, whilst I wait for the brickbats to start flying!

Hi Jon, that's good news about the USB extender, I have one on the way just now so I think I'll order another one tonight. I like what you're saying about wind power as I too am of the same mind as you. Shetland is in process of thrashing it out just now about these turbines, they are wanting to erect dozens of them and are trying to sell it to the public. They already have 5 and a lot of the time they are shut down due to maintenance, lack of wind or too much wind. If we get any more white elephants up here, we'll be able to start safaris and maybe even have to introduce culling (Not too sure if white elephant ivory is particularly valuable)

Hi Sandy, this is the active USB extender I've got

http://www.lindy.co.uk/12m-usb-2-active-extension-pro-4-port-hub/42783.html

no connections, other than as a very satisfied customer.

Hi Jon, thanks for that link to Lindy. I have just been on ebay 30 mins ago and ordered another 5 mtr active USB, so that makes 2x5 mtr actives on their way (different makes, though I hope that's not a problem) I will keep your link in mind but I will put it on hold just now as there is also £50 worth of coax etc on the way. I think the wife will be wondering what's going on shortly.
