Sar Aircraft?
« on: March 05, 2010, 10:33:06 AM »
Sometimes there is an unknown aircraft (to me at least!)flying around  my vicinity. It only transmits AIS positions, no Mode-S or ADS-B signals. Because I use the 3D Radarbox software and the Shipplotter .kml the aircraft is visible on my Radarbox map. To my knowledge it is a Sar-aircraft, but I am not sure about that...

Question: why does this aircraft only transmits AIS signals and no Mode-S/ADS-B signals?

In ShipPlotter, what vessel class/type is it listed as?

http://www.shipais.com/showship.php?map=Friesland&mmsi=2021 has it listed as a type 14 - Reserved Haz D, so not listed as a SAR aircraft.

Of course, many aircraft don't have ModeS fitted :(

Telling by speed and type I would say it's a SAR aircraft.

Have them overhere (S.E. Netherlands) on regular basis on AIS / Shipplotter.

Btw, never seen SAR on my RadarBox Mylog.

According to Shipplotter it is listed as Res Sar Ac (P). So that made me think it could be a Sar Aircraft. Pity it is one of the many aircrafts not sending any mode-s signal...

Jannuh,
Thanks for the movie. Never logged a Sar in Mylog Radarbox too. The Coastguard Dorniers are regular guests though,

I have spotted this one today again , now transmitting both mode-s and AIS. It is an Augusta AW139 Police Helicopter s/n 31267 Registration PH-PXY, using ZXP25 as Callsign/Flight Id

If you're interested in tracking SAR helicopters, then ShipTrax is very good for this.  G-SARB currently tracking in my area:
