missing a lot of Qantas overflies YMML
« on: February 25, 2010, 04:29:20 AM »
Is it just that Qantas don't like using ADS-B?

I can hear their aircraft flying over about 3 or 4 nm south of my home at about 7000ft, but nothing shows up on radarbox. Can see them on mode-s transmitting and acars.
It's very hit or miss with them some do some don't. Seems to be mainly 737's and only Qantas. Every other company show up.
Now when I hear an aircraft and it's not on radarbox I can guarantee it's a Qantas....Been right 100% so far when I go outside to confirm it. It just must be them. Any other Melbourne users seeing this as well.
I know it's not a range problem as I pick up other companies 150nm south and on the same flight path.

Steve
P.S Waiting for my BS1105 and LMR400 to come :-)

Strange, my understanding is that 90% of the Qantas fleet - all the Airbuses, the 747s, 767s and 737-800s - have ADS-B, leaving just the non-NG 737s with only Mode S.

Perhaps you're just unlucky in that it's mostly the latter that you pick up.

I think at least the OG series 767s are also just Mode S with no ADS-B. Those that I pick up in Auckland are that way anyway.

Good point, come to think of it I've never seen any of those on the PlanePlotter map either.

A quick look at the current aircraft over Sydney, shows only 1 in 6 Qantas planes with ADS-B

Never thought at looking at the logs!!!!!

Well only had the radarbox since the 15th of Feb.
Runs most days here in Melb.
A small extraction from the short time I have had this radarbox.

Just concerning 737's
All companies, just working on my logs for the week with 737's. Might be of interest to someone else. The following variations I have not 1 listed ADS-B contact for at all.
Read as 737 - XXX

3B7
3YO
476
47L
76N
76Q
