Sharing great aviation websites
« on: January 01, 2010, 05:56:04 PM »
Happy New Year all.

There seems to be a wealth of knowledge amongst the AirNav Forum community of some of the most interesting/useful aviation websites.

Is there merit in having a thread on our forum for great aviation websites (just like there is for interesting aircraft, call signs etc). Whilst most of us know most websites, there are always a few we don't know. Therefore, I have a few suggestions for some threads:

Thread 1: “Websites – ADS-B logs” - Forum members post web addresses for sites with regularly updated ADS-B logs with a short description of the geographic areas they cover.  Whilst Libhomeradar does a good job, it no longer covers non airline aircraft.

Thread 2: “Websites – live positional data” - sites which display live aircraft positional data from ADS-B receivers. E.g. Casper.frontier.nl, Radar Virtuel

Thread 3: “Websites – air traffic control” – sites which provide good information on charts, frequencies, live feeds.

Thread 4: “Great websites – General interest”

All other suggestions welcome.  Perhaps these are all covered under one thread e.g. “Great aviation websites”?

Other blogs such as Radar Spotters have in the past attempted this and it would be a shame if our own beloved messageboard lags behind. I am happy to start the ball rolling if there is enough willingness to contribute. Please share your thoughts.

Let's go ahead with it! We have sent some interesting sites to the Aviation board lately.

Here they go (feel free to organize them later on - most of them airline pilot related as some of AirNav team members are airline pilots):

- Interesting Airline Pilot charts site: http://www.aircharts.ch
- Flight Procedures: http://www.smartcockpit.com/
- Live Audio from Amateur Radio Receivers: http://www.globaltuners.com/
- Live ATC: http://www.liveatc.net

Thanks AirNav Development for your kind support.

For the first installment, please find below a list of dedicated airport Plane Spotter websites which provide movement logs and photos of interesting aircraft.

Leeds Bradford - http://www.lbaviation.co.uk/
Manchester http://www.tasmanchester.com/Home.html
Glasgow - http://www.egpf.info/
Liverpool - http://www.nwan.co.uk/review.html
London City - http://www.lcacc.org/operations/operations.html
LHR/LGW - http://www.lhr-lgw.co.uk/

Those of us who are aware of other similar sites across Europe (or other great aviation sites), can you please add to this thread with the web addresses so all users can benefit from them.

Cheers.

Have you tried www.aviation-links.co.uk ? That has over 25,000 links to aviation-related sites, hard to beat !

Thanks Dave. This is an excellent site and should be in everyone's bookmarks.

Look forward to hearing about more great sites from some of the others in the forum.

Again, the purpose of this thread is not to create an extensive list of websites but making the forum members aware of the select "must have" sites which are best-in-class and are worth sharing.

Here's one more, a central repository of all European ATC charts provided by Eurocontrol. Sign up for EAD “Basic access”. Go to “Enter Applications” and select “PAMS”. http://www.ead.eurocontrol.int/eadcms/eadsite/index.php%3Foption=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=25&Itemid=3.html

I just remembered this pages:

https://www.notams.jcs.mil/common/icao/ ( https://www.notams.jcs.mil/dinsQueryWeb/ )

If needed you can find here the ICAO code for (almost) every Airport on this planet.

I often use  http://flightaware.com/live/ to see what filed flight plan is for any particular flight. The flight plan is shown in the “Route” box. One can see 5 days flight plan history for a particular flight number. Works for flights to the UK or US.

Then I use the following website to plot the route on google maps in detail. It even allows you to choose the SID/STAR for the airports.

http://www.airlineroute.net

Provides daily updates of changes to and newly introduced scheduled airline routes. Includes a search facility to view all messages relating to your airport/airline/country of interest.

Another new website it maps the great circle route and distance between airports.  There are also pages giving DAFIF details for the selected airport. Highly addictive

I've just discovered an FAA list of the actual operators of bizjets (rather than the finance companies) - It's their list of RVSM approvals and covers the US, Canada and Mexico, and you can doenload the data as PDF's or Excel spreadsheets.
