Positional information
« on: January 18, 2010, 03:11:47 PM »
Might have got the wrong end of the stick here but bear with me.....

Do non ADS-B equipped flights, for instance flybe,  transmit their position on Acars?

If so could a download to the RB software be provided to pick up on the acars positional info. and and provide a fix on the maps?

Non ADS-B flights do not send position information.

In my limited experience with ACARS, the position information is only passed occasionally and is of very little use when it comes to tracking aircraft.

I'm sure somebody 'in the know' can add to this.

I used acars way back in one of it's various offerings, wacars, jacars, posfix etc and it was fine for tracking although the positional reports were much less frequent.

It was possible to predict to the course, speed etc and produce a moving track. All a bit Heath Robinson compared with todays Radar but fun nevertheless.

Airnav have already got all the necassary knowledge and experience - just wondered whether integration was possible. Something that may fill in some of the gaps without having go down the plane-plotters route.

The ACARS plots are rare and sometimes just contain details of the past route it has taken, so won't really be helpfull with RBs time out settings. They would quickly dissapear.
