Sincere thanks to EK01 and viking9 for your replies.

Ian, various people have given me details that I couldn't find elsewhere quoting their source as Libhomeradar. Just found this site and looks good.

Tom, assume this frequent code-swapping is for security reasons?

New 3.11b working well for me - but off to research to Libhomeradar site

Chris

Chris, I would imagine so. They only started transmitting mode S earlier this year. We were able to tie up tail numbers initially but after about six weeks people at the fence were telling us that the tail numbers didn't tie up any more. The powers that be were obviously reading our emails and forum reports :-)

Chris,
I find the Libhomeradar site one of the best. If you click on database search and then put in mode S code you have loads of information will come up including registration , latest routes flown, etc.
Have fun exploring the site.

There are so many places to feed nowadays :(  Airnav network, Planeplotter, MilModeSLogger, Libhomeradar, etc.  What we need is a single point of sharing.

Firstly I think we might need a new thread here - before I get accused of steering this thread off topic - supposed to be Funny or Unusual Flight ID's...

Having said that, have been impressed with my trials with Libhomeradar site.

Live site is great - until it gets overloaded and then just get message to retry in a few minutes time. Also a message that as from Nov 2009, only aircraft operating for a recognised airline will be displayed. (No small or biz planes?)

Managed to get the libhomeradar.org aircraft database editor up and running this evening - this enables me to get details whilst off line.

Took me two nights to get so far - a) their forum has been 'hacked' - no use at all (remember that all who bicker about this forum - it is great) and b) wasted hours trying to delete failed intallations using right mouse clicks - only to find my RHB mouse button is deceased...

Just saw an American Eagle E135 using FREBIRD for a callsign.

This is probably the most appropriate thread to ask why some aircraft use the ID of AVIONICS. Is it because they are doing an avionics test flight? Is it a recognised convention of some sort, or is there another explanation?

ALLIED is also a default.  Allied Signal is a manufacturer of transponders.  Another default you'll see is GABLESEN  http://www.gableseng.com/home.asp

Freqhopping useful on the  Allied and Gablesen callsigns.  Our local air ambulance in Buckinghamshire uses the latter.

Rod, a bit of thread crossing, but it might be worth doing Allied signals and Gables engineering logos or a generic 'transponder default' logo.
