Emergency landing at EGCC (Manchester)
« on: June 15, 2009, 01:59:21 PM »
FlyBe's flight Jersey 343K was squawking 7700 with nosewheel problems on approach to Manchester this afternoon. I managed to record most of the ATC communications and have edited out the empty gaps and uploaded them to http://www.gfrost.co.uk/SquawkBox/Jersey343K.wav (691KB, 5:53 mins) which should be streamable for those who want to hear an emergency in progress. Without giving too much away, I can say that runway 23R was closed for about 20 minutes and runway 23L used instead.

By the way, just as an aside, when RadarBox pops up an alert with aircraft details (e.g. squawking 7700) do we have a quick way to get to that aircraft? Because if we do then I haven't found it yet! I had to search for the aircraft registration first in my networking flight list then in the MyFlights list to find it.

Thanks for that, Andy - interesting stuff!

On the wish to go to the aircraft on the grid direct from the alert, I think we're going to have to wait for version 4, (or perhaps 5).

Why not quickly sort the list by squawk code, then the 7700 will be close to the top (or bottom) of the list - or you could use the quick filter ssr = 77*

Good thinking Allocator. I normally run with just Status/FlightID/Registration/Aircraft/Altitude visible on the panel so that I get to see as much of the map as possible, but of course if I pull the panel to the right then I'll be able to sort on squawk code as you say or use the filter. It would be nice though if the alert had a "Centre map on aircraft" link/button though (a future version perhaps).

Very intresting indeed!

Would I be right in thinking that that aircraft wouldnt of shown on the map (Typically a Dash8?)

For those of you that havent seen it, here is the link to one of the best ATC videos ive ever seen on YouTube, a Thompson Fly 757 birdstrike on take off out of Manchester EGCC.

Got a bit emotional first time I watched it - how cool and collected the pilots and controllers are in a situation like that!

Interesting video, and yes, you're quite right, the Dash8 doesn't transmit positional informaton except for its altitude. Maybe the link on the alert could be just "Highlight aircraft", which means it centres on the map if it has positional information or scrolls it to the middle on the Interface Panel (with small black arrow on the left highlighting the line) otherwise.

Out of interest, what usually happens to the aircraft 'Tag'? when sqwarking 7700 on RB / ATC screen?

Does it flash?
