Up/Down arrows - here they are (not)
« on: June 15, 2009, 05:10:08 PM »
It's an easy task to edit a given font and replace the "+" (plus) and "-" (minus) character with an up/down arrow. Any TTF-Fonteditor will do the job. However, the result ist somewhat amazing. I'll let anyone draw their own conclusion. And yes, the "-" (minus) character of font "radarA" has been replaced with the downarrow, really!

Find my works as download, based on Arial and Verdana font. However, only the "B" fonts ("***B.ttf") will show the down arrow.

Explanation
***A.ttf: "+" and "-" character replaced with an up/down arrow only
***B.ttf: "+", "-" and "hyphen" character replaced with an up/down/down arrow

Arial
radarB.ttf: http://www.yourfilehost.com/media.php?cat=other&file=radarB.ttf
radarA.ttf: http://www.yourfilehost.com/media.php?cat=other&file=radarA.ttf

Verdana
radar_verdana_B.ttf: http://www.yourfilehost.com/media.php?cat=other&file=radar_verdana_B.ttf
radar_verdana_A.ttf: http://www.yourfilehost.com/media.php?cat=other&file=radar_verdana_A.ttf

Welcome to the forum, vruma.

That sounds like an excellent idea - could you do a similar trick with Verdana Ref? I might give it a try. I prefer Verdana to Arial for screen fonts.

Hi Rod,

I'll gladly to that to "Verdana". Check your PM some time later.

However, I suggest to give the linked Arial font a first trial. You'll realize soon where the limit of this solution is, as the text of the route information display will look somewhat disturbed (e.g. "EGLL - EHAM" will not show up this way!).

FYI
That's the software I used to edit the font: http://www.high-logic.com/fontcreator.html

I suggest to modify a copy of the original font to be used and to save the font with a different name. (To edit the fonts name as it will show up in the Windows font manager, go to > Tools > Autonaming and enter an appropiate name).

Hi Manuel,

make sure to install the font with the window font manager and use font "radarB"!
Here's what you need to do:

- download the font file
- goto > START > CONTROL PANEL > FONTS
- in the menue select FILE > INSTALL NEW FONT
- navigate to the font file location
- change to Radarbox software and select the font, press APPLY

You should now see the changes.

Please note that this modified font will have an effect on all text using a hyphen (-) character. (this because the hyphen character is obvioulsy used by the Radarbox software for both - text separation and descend indication. Thus, modifying the minus character in a font file will not show any change as it isn't used for that purpose). Note: this font "trick" is experimental only!
