Colin - I didn't live near Heathrow - but every half term holiday (and  the main  school holidays ) we would  catch a Royal Blue coach from Southampton for a day  planespotting at "LAP".

A Jetstream Starliner  was the  last Lockheed Constellation development --- just about the ultimate in  prop airliners...

Dave, I see what you mean about the above. What about an ear splitting VC10 roaring down the runway and clogging up the air with smoke and no do gooders complaining about noise....... happy days :)

How about a late 60's aircraft that would have pleased then even today - Bristol Britannia, AKA the Whispering Giant.   
At Liverpool you could NOT hear it even when it ran up to full throttle at the end of the closest runway.

If distinctive  engine  noises are your thing , there are two that I find very  satisfying.....

First  and top of my list any day - is the   wholly distinctive  sound of a  Dakota....partly at least because I grew up  to the sound of them flying over all day long(BEA/Morton/Derby AW/USAF all in and out of Eastliegh in the  50-s)

The second and rather   more modern as well as totally different ....the sound of an F-104G Starfighter as it does a curving run past at low  level. That sound is totally unique.

Props: TU-144 and AN-22, closely followed by the York, the Elizabethan and the Electra
 (Dates me a bit)

Jets: Coronado and B-52....or for lots of noise the TU-104 or English Electric Lightning

That's enough excitement for me for one night - back to my window box....
