I have 2 questions about the RB
« on: May 02, 2009, 04:23:42 PM »
i was wondering, the 250 miles range, is with the supplied antenna?
also, whats the connection of the antenna (got the grammer wrong..)? BNC or SMA?
for the first question, im on an 8th floor if the height helps.

Hello,
250nm is the 'maximum' range of the ADSB signals not the range of the aerial and the connector is a SMA. Hope that helps.
you could look at some of the polar diagrams here to see the range for the RB aerial.

Hi Jordan,

Here are details of how the antenna is connected to the box:

http://www.airnavsystems.com/forum/index.php?topic=634.0

The 250 mile range is the theoretical maximum and you could see aircraft out to this range using the standard antenna if it was out in the clear with nothing between it and the aircraft.  However, if anything gets between the antenna and the aircraft, then the range will be less.  If you can get your antenna on the roof of your tower bock, your reception should be good, but if it is on a window ledge, then the building will shield some aircraft.

Of course, this doesn't matter too much if you use the Network, as you can then see aircraft worldwide wherever there is a RadarBox user sharing data :-)

Ok thanks, generally I receive aircarft (ACARS and the normal voice freqs) on a good day as far as 250-300 miles away and radar stations 400 miles away.
I have an external antenna that is about 90cm long, but im wondering if ill have the same great recepection with the supplied antenna, because i want that the normal antenna i use will remain for listening

It's almost impossible to tell what your reception will be like until you actually try.  Where about in the world are you?  We might be able to upload a screen shot so that you can get an idea of what you might see.

Jordan,

Here is a quick shot of the whole of the Mediterranean. The aircraft just appear as dots as I've zoomed out a long way.  Red is descending, blue is climbing and green is level.

Here is the eastern Mediterranean zoomed in so you can see some detail.  As I'm in the UK, this is all RadarBox Network traffic.

The antenna for ANRB will display different reception charecteristics to the one you use for voice/ACARS transmissions.

Voice/Acars  is  in the range 108-136Mhz (VHf- civil) or 225/400mhz(UHF- Military).
The VHF antenna will not work with ANRB - you have to use the supplied antenna (or suitable other  - for the frquency)

ANRB (ModeS transmissions  ) is at 1090Mhz and will in general be more prone to attenuation than VHF.....more easily blocked by high ground/buildings etc etc.

My antenna is a general 25-1300MHz antenna.
the buildings and hills are no real factor for me...
Allocator thanks a lot for the images.

You will tend to get better reception using a dedicated antenna rather than a  multiband one.

Ok, I have another question about the network feature.
What i will see is the traffic from other receivers (of otehr users like me) through out the world? or receivers of the company?
and is there a receiver around the Munich/Frankfurt area's?

Yes you will see other users data which they have picked up. Almost all of Europe is covered so there will be plenty to see :)
