ACARS Decoding
« on: April 16, 2009, 09:45:25 PM »
Im thinking on buying the ACARS Decoder add on for RB, but before I do, just wondering if someone could tell me quickly what its all about and what type of information is received?

Is its transmitted and receiving using the supplied 1090 twig?

Thanks

James

ACARS Decoder needs an airband radio which needs to be connected to your computer via a soundcard.

RadarBox does not pick up ACARS signals.

Here is a primer about ACARS.

http://www.acarsonline.co.uk/about/

Some folks upload their ACARS reception to the internet. Some decoders give you the opportunity to use those uploads.

There are free decoders as well as paid for ones. You may want to try something like ACARSD which you can get from

The screen shots on the Airnav Acars Decoder page are typical of what messages look like which will also contain weather and performance reports.

Airlines such as BEE, RYR, BMI and other commutters don't transmit on Acars. From my location near EGNM I scan 2 or 3 frequencies to get the best from my Acars set up, using 2 scanners plus an antenna in the loft.

Hope this helps
