Where is your antenna placed, are you getting a good line of sight with these aircraft?

We have recorded that and have plenty of examples to show.
WE HAVE NO ADS-B RECEPTIONS. ANY!
Just Mode S (ELS) no more.

Hi Vladimir

There is no fundamental difference between Mode S (altitude/squawk) transmissions and ADS-B (lat/lon/track/GS/etc) ones apart from the packet length.

Is it possible that reception conditions are poor in your area and your RadarBox is only just able to receive/decode short Mode S packets, but longer ADS-B packets aren't being picked up intact ?

The problem has been just found!

From the beginning of connecting our RadarBox we have been used USB Extender.

It’s very strange but through the USB Extender there is a loss of data (Flight ID, GS, Hdg, Latitude and Longitude).

But without the USB Extender we see ADS-B aircrafts even up to 150 nm distance from us on the roof of 20 floor building where our office is located.

We are using StarTech.com USBThere USB100EXT.

Please, advise about what could be wrong with USB Extender?

Please, people we urgently would like to know your reasoning and assumption on this matter.

You can find the Manual on this Extender in the internet our I could send it by e-mail.

Kind regards,

Looking at the StarTech manual, the USB100EXT only supports full-speed (12 Mb/s) USB devices - I don't know if RadarBox falls into this category or not.

The manual also says that "The USBThere can supply sufficient power to support all low-power devices and most high-power devices."

Maybe RadarBox requires too much power from the USB ?  Unfortunately there is no provision for powering it independently using a PSU.

Hi Vladimir

You are coming through loud and clear on the network - many thanks for your input.

Are you planning to be online 24/7?

Yes,

We plan to be online 24/7 and monitor 3 Kiev airports (UKBB, UKKK and UKKM ) between we are situated and share this data with all other members in AirNav Network.

Approximate distance we have managed to get is 180 nm with standard antenna on the roof of 20 floor tower.

But first we need to resolve the problem with another antenna and extending the distance between roof and 3 rd floor where our office is located.

Unfortunately due to financial crisis it’s very difficult for us to spray funds for such projects.
And because of luck of funds we need your support to resolve this issue with minimum financial spending.

We planed to use USB Extender but unfortunately there was found a problem (see above).

So we need your (Network members) and AirNav Team support on this matter to be a valued part of the network in this region.

Thank you guys ...

I would suggest trying to contact StarTech your USB extender first and see whether they have any further help on the boosting it.

If that doesn't work you either need to try a low loss cable from your antenna to your floor and likely you will need a mast amp to compensate the loss of the cable.

Also can you test by connecting the default antenna to the RB and using the usb extender just to confirm there is nothing wrong with your external antenna on your roof.

We do use default antenna to the RB without usb extender and everything is Ok.
When we monitor at once up to 5 ADS-B aircrafts we quickly connect RB through the usb extender (and 1 m Cat 5 cable) and after approximately 30 seconds we see all those 5 aircrafts but without all ADS-B parameters (GS, Hdg, FID, Lat, Lon).
RB receives the signals from them but for some unknown reasons it doesn’t transmit some data through the usb extender to notebook.
We do this procedure directly on the roof with laptop.

Dave has a point here, the USBThere can supply up to 300mA. A USB 2.0 Dual Power Cable and a 5v USB Power Adapter could be used to power the Radarbox. These are mainly used to power external USB drives with Netbooks.

Dear all,

The problem is not in power supply.

We have just made separate power supply directly from PC USB to RadarBox Mini-USB and data transferring from RadarBox through USB Extender to PC.

The same situation – not all ADS-B parameters are shown.

And When we quickly connect RB directly to the PC all ADS-B parameters (GS, Hdg, FID, Lat, Lon) appear.

Something with data transferring in this USB Extender.

Please, who have any reasoning and assumption on this matter?
