RB LEDs - what's happening when.....?

I note that sometimes, when there are no flashes of the white LED, and hence no messages being received, every now and again the blue USB LED goes into a paroxysm of flashing, with lots of rapid pulsing.

What's happening when this occurs? I thought that once it was initialised, the RB passes data to the software and that's about it. So what is it doing when there is USB traffic but yet no messages are being received and there are no flights at all in My Flights?

Its just keeping it self busy :) making sure its still connected.
