SID and STAR as background image
« on: December 30, 2008, 04:13:10 PM »
Hello everyone,

Here are some screenshots froms the maps I made to display SID and STAR charts as background image.
Thanks again to Tarbat for his spreadsheet.

Stéphane

PS.
They are only a few examples; I did the same for both east and west configurations for LFPG departures and arrivals.

Very impressive :-)

So, how did you produce these?  We've had people asking how to produce outline files for holds in the past.

Allocator,I think they're background images.  Stéphane then used my spreadsheet to generate the correct coordinates for Radarbox.

Ahhh .... yes, I see what you mean - that would make sense.

But you can see the RB maps through them, normally it's either the background image or the RB maps, but not both.

Still looks good though :-)

Yes, they are background images.

My start working file was the ARR/DEP atlas files published by the french AIP.

I extracted from it the charts to jpeg format to correct them with photoshop.
I worked with layers and straighten out the map to make the UTM coordinate match as close as possible with the RB mercator grid.

Here are working files for a north departure to UK (for example). Put the files in your Satellite folder.

Good work!

Ive thought about this idea too, but always been under the impression that SID / STARs sheets are not always exactly to scale?

They are to scale, sometime a fix or a beacon may be at the wrong location because of the sheet size but it's always mentionned.

As example on the following chart, the Creil vortac is located at a wrong position but we can read "NOT TO SCALE".
Also for the vor CAN, as it is outside the sheet, the line leading to it is ended by /\/\/\/ to show us it's not to scale.

However, to calibrate my map images, I only trusted the original grid coordinates.

Wonderful idea! How have you produced the appropriate .stl file?

Thanks!

This sounds great but... seems that i'm a newbie in this and I can't to it right for Faro, Portugal.
I think I'm messing this up... using the spreadsheed attached before.
So any help would be greatfull.
Manuel.

Hello Manuel,

Prior to use Tarbat's spreadsheed you first have to use the charts published by your country's AIP.
Choose the chart you're interrested in and make an appropriate map in JPG format. Once you know this map's coordinates, you will use the spreasheet to convert the coordinates for RB.
I warn you, from the initial chart to the final working image, this could be a tedious work but how rewarding.

Let me know if you need more help.
