Real-Time Network Location Map
« on: October 06, 2008, 08:07:23 AM »
Hello

I am running RB and looking at the real-time network location screen, but my postion is not showing. Is this normal or is there something wrong.

In Preferences/Radarbox I have Share Flight Data Ticked and also have Get Flights From Radarbox Network Ticked

Cheers

Andy

No need to worry, the map determines positions from your IP address and some are out by 2-30 +miles or some or not shown at all.

This is done to protect privacy of the customer.

Abrad41, the truth is, they don't...

And as for 2 - 30 miles out, not in my case (or some others) - more like different countries...  And I suspect, not really anything to do with privacy, more for convenience.

See this thread:  (and others on the subject)

I see this is a very good site - Tells me I am in West Byfleet - and you have guess it, I am no where near there.

AirNav Support - do you have any comments. It would be nice to see where we are picking up the feeds from over the network

There are plenty of topics on this, have a search of the forum.

Regarding a convenience, that is totally wrong, we have the station details, it would be so much easier for us to use the GPS position rather than reversing the location from the IP.

Then if you have the information, why not make use of it?  It wouldn't be rocket science to extrapolate from the co-ordinates an approximate location and publish it.  Even those shy, retiring users surely couldn't object to that?

Besides, those that post screenshots with "Home" in the middle of the picture are already giving away their approximate locations, at least sufficient to get an idea where they might be.

It's better than blithely showing a map with a user in France appearing to be in Germany, just because that's where his IP is located... no use to anyone!

Maybe they know where Bin Laden is. Is there a location showing up as "Secret Terror Cave, Pakistan"? Then I bet he's actually in Dublin.

As mentioned in other topics, we said we will look into adding it into the future. It will need a software so change so customers can decide whether to have there exact location shown, by default it won't.

Why? We have a lot of customers who are sensitive about there location.

For the life of me, I can't see how anyone could possibly be 'sensitive' about being shown as located, for example, in Manchester.   Let's have a sense of proportion in this.  I, for one, look forward to the proposed future (and more usable) map.

DC,

I am sure if we made the map use the location in RB and made it less accurate we would still get posts saying I am in next Heathrow and I can't see myself next Heathrow on the map etc.. Therefore to please them we will use the exact location you enter if you tick a box.

There is a world outside Europe :) and some of these countries are not happy about people tracking aircraft so certain customers don't want to arouse suspicion. Hence as mentioned before we can display the customers using the IP location and they can have a different coloured tag on the map to show this.

That should please all :)
