proper VHF yellow stick use
« on: June 10, 2024, 01:06:06 AM »
Had the stick for a year plus now and just started working on an ATC feed for nearby traffic. I use a Windows computer. Not sure if having the USB plugged and the Rocket Broadcaster filled in as required is just enough to start hearing ATC. So far i hear nothing, but also am using no antenna! So there's maybe the mess. Any tip is highly appreciated.

You will need a VHF antenna to pick up the signals

Alright.. any alternative antennas solutions? Like a refurbished TV antenna or something? Also how a station is approved to become visible to other users?

The attached sketch shows a very simple and easy antenna I made for marine signals on AIS band (162 MHz). It works very good. Each of it's arm is 46 cm long, which is 1/4 wavelength at 162 Mhz.

For Airband, using mid band frequency of 129 Mhz, the length of each 1/4 wavelength arm should be 58 cm instead of 46 cm

The attached photo shows how I have mounted AIS 162 MHz Dipole antenna made as per sketch in my above post.

The antenna is mounted indoor, attached to glass of a large window by adhesive tape pieces.

Just bought this antenna https://www.amazon.ca/HERCHR-Aviation-Frequency-Flexible-Interface/dp/B099HZLB61 for the purpose, but discovered a SMA adapter is needed. Could you help choose the right connector? Thanks..

OK.. so required random BNC male to SMA female adapter or a specific model that handles the VHF range?

Hope you got you vhf yellow to hear anything.  I have two of them both hear nothing as teh flights go direct overhead to land 4 miles from me.  My scanner can hear fine from inside the home and also when using the air yellow antenna.  Support has offered nothing at all when asked on ideas to check the unit.

What version of Pi and OS are you using.  Do you have other dongles on your Pi and if so have you serialised them correctly
