Station Range Off Centre
« on: March 25, 2024, 11:06:12 PM »
I have just started sharing data but after a couple of hours I have noticed that the station range outline is not centred on my station location.  The station location is set correctly and shows as such on the map but the outline is definately off centre to my east by about 50nm.  See screenshot attached.

Has this been reported before?  Is there a solution?

It usually takes some time for the coverage to fill out and it looks like it has still to be covered in completely.  Whats your station number, I ave been loking at the stations and cant see a new NZ station listed

Station ID is EXTRPI599162.  In the attached screenshot the area marked with the red arrow should be over Auckland.  I do know the traffic routes in my area and I can categorically state that this outline is not a representation of my reception.  I can't get 200nm out east due to the Ruahine Ranges blocking low angle reception but easily get 200nm+ out the west.

I would need to look at a live map to make an accurate comment however I will make the following comments, feel free to shoot me down

Palmerston North to Auckland is around 245 miles straight line for you to pick up anything over Auckland the aircraft would need to be high level minimum around FL330.  You will loose traffic inbound as it descends below your horizon and similarly wont pick it up until it comes above your horizon.  Any traffic from the north and east into Auckland will descend below your horizon well before the range of your antenna.  It is therefore very conceivable that you will have no coverage over Auckland as any traffic in the area will be below your line of sight horizon.  Also looking at your station shot, aircraft shown are definately heading to and from Auckland eg JQ229, NZ527 and NZ8282 is on track for Gisborne

Now to the traffic coverage shown by your arrow,  I dont have knowledge of traffic off the ocean to airports further south like Wellington/Christchurch but looking at their arrivals board I dont see any scheduled traffic coming from that direction.  Any aircraft picked up there must be at very high level to be in your line of sight over your horizon so must be inbound a field further south and may be military, cargo or biz jet coming off the eastern Pacific into NZ and as such it is very conceiveable that the coverage area is accurate

I would also state you have only been online for 1 day so there is every possibility that you will pick up something at high level around the Auckland area over the coming days/weeks which will show but it all depends on traffic but see the difference in your 2 covarage maps in 10 hours

@nzradar
Try this. It will show you what are your limits of reception in all directions based on terrain around you.

What is the Maximum Range I can Get?

OK, looking at the coverage I have no coverage extending more than 200nm west, north-west or south-west on the Radarbox screen.  And this includes a significant gap over New Plymouth, however, all flights from Auckland to Christchurch 90% of the time fly overhead the NP VOR and all the Auckland to Queenstown flights fly further to the west than New Plymouth but the coverage is not showing for these flights.  Attached are some database captures of my ADS-B coverage for some of the flights from Auckland to/from Melbourne where the range is greater than 200nm.  Similarly for Wellington to/from Brisbane (QFA355/356) and Wellington to/from Sydney (ANZ240/249).Also screenshots showing ANZ273 and QFA356 on standard routings in the clear coverage areas.

So I'll say it again, the coverage appears to be some 50nm off centre to the east, I do not get flights that far east, only UAL use that sector plus the very odd private jet heading to Christchurch but much further west than the coverage outline would suggest.

I would appreciate some 'developer' to check the centre co-ordinates for the coverage outline as they are not the same as my receiver location.

Did you try checking/correcting your location (latitude & longitude) in the RB24 site map by clicking "Edit" on it? Please see screenshot attached.

I suggest that you contact support with your query, its just us users on here and you have set the centre of the coverage via your lat/lon.   I can see no reason why you would be showing 50 miles offset when you can see quite clearly that your flights are heading in the correct track and coverage is only shown where aircraft are picked.  Aircraft are lost descending into Auckland due to them going under your antenna horizon and therefore will be no coverage,  See attached shot showing aircraft tacking to and from NZAA

Regarding flights from the east, LAN801 is showing this time around Gisborne with its track coming from well east of the current location

I note NZ610 is displayed on your map and it routes Queenstown to Auckland and you state they are not displayed

I note NZ273 on the map outwith your coverage area at that time but the coverage map should have extended now to the are of that flight

What flights have you seen on your TAR map which gives you coverage over Auckland, if you can advise that will assist in investigating.  I am unable to watch your coverage as I am in the UK and the time difference is to great to enable.  I would imagine playback would show the aircraft giving coverage east of Auckland but I dont know how to work it

There must be someting obstructing to your north west that is blocking that slot from the coverage available from your location from south west of New Plymouth, possibly Mount Taranaki at 2518m at that area.  However I just watched NZ611 flying through the coverage gap at NPL so expect it to be covered in tomorrow

I watched a flight yesterday evening going along the top of the coverage line west into Auckland from Australia and is was lost from the map as it descended through FL230

Regarding distances on your TAR, what time out is used after the signal is lost and how does it compare to RB time out as I would suggest that the TAR timeout is greater to keep it on screen longer and that would fill holes in coverage as the aircraft wil be getting picked up again before the TAR signal times out
