978 UAT vs 1090ES
« on: March 27, 2019, 01:24:16 PM »
I just saw that the Dump program has added 978 UAT (GA aviation US).   I realize that 1090ES is the norm worldwide.   But is there a possibility of having 978 UAT added to the Flightstick for US?

Radarbox's FlightStick, and FlightAware's ProStickPlus both have an integral 1090-Mhz SAW filter. The 978 Mhz is very close to their lower cutoff frequency. These may receive  978 Mhz UAT, but possibly with reduced performance. Someone who has used these for 978 Mhz can tell better.

I could see widening the skirt of the notch so that 978 MHz could be heard.  How would the data be processed?

Why not use a non ADSB dongle such as NooElec and use it to get 978,  I would expect you would need something similar to the Zadig drivers used to make it suitable for ADSB to enable it to be used for 978 though.

Googling produces some results and there are some discussions on the FR24 and Flightaware flight aware forums and this one on ADS-B Exchange https://www.adsbexchange.com/how-to-feed/adding-978-mhz-ads-b-capability-to-your-pipi2/

I would imagine that if your receiver produces 978 data that shows on the screen Airnav would use it but you would need to ask them

Would US 978 UAT data (GA) be of interest to RadarBox and AirNav?

BTW I am overlooking the Purdue Airport thus I see most traffic as it departs.  The airport is at 600 ft and I am at 700 ft and within a few miles of the airport.

Another consideration is that the ground stations for ADS-B are fairly close.  Thus I would assume that our stations are hearing the rebroadcast of both 1090ES and 978 UAT on 1090 MHz.
