Thunder And Lightning

As we usually hear about boxes needing returned after thunder and lightning I thought I'd tell you our experience today.

It was nice and sunny with a bit of a breeze and all of a sudden the skies opened and  there was thunder, lightning and rain like I have never seen before. Our pluviometer (rain gauge) registered the rain rate at 6.47 inches per hour. 

We were lucky I know, but our box continued on its merry way throughout although our sky tv went off. A bit more warning and we would have unplugged the box but we were all too frightened to touch the aerial coax   :)

Just glad to say we weren't one of the unlucky ones who have had to return it or I think we'd be climbing the walls by now without our Radarbox!

We will unplug in future if we get warning though.

We had a clap of thunder in Shetland followed by a power cut for about 30 mins. It again raised doubts as to putting antenna outside. Still toying with the idea but it's a lot of hassle for maybe not too much gain and then the problems with lightning etc.

With the high winds and extreme weather we get up here, I decided a while ago that any possible gain I would get by putting the antenna outside just wasn't worth it, so I have all my antennas mounted in the loft.

I usually just disconnect all antennas from my radios if I know in advance of severe weather. I find this to be

I think you must have some luck.

My RadarBox is switch on from day 1 (24/7), in Sept. 2009.

My SR162 AIS receiver is also on from day 1 (24/7), 5-6 years ago.

Also had a powercut last week, for about 20-30 sec., first one since 1992, when there were highwater levels.
