Norton problem solution
« on: June 20, 2010, 01:23:16 AM »
I know that this post isn't directly related to RadarBox, but it will give a dramatic boost to its performance on some users' computers. It's to anyone using Norton Internet Security.

I've been plagued by desperate slowing down of my computer for several months, and have suspected a program called ccSvcHst.exe of swamping the processor – it's a Norton scanning program. Today I took the plunge and followed the advice on several forums, and it's worked a treat – it's like getting a new computer! If anyone is suffering similarly, here are the steps – it's very simple, if slightly scary.

1 – make sure you have the Norton Internet Security setup file available. (Mine's called NIS09EN.exe.)
2 – download and run the Norton Removal Tool – available here: http://www.symantec.com/nrt
3 – reinstall Norton Internet Security from your setup file – don't forget to run Liveupdate afterwards.
4 – set Scan exclusions for your RadarBox folder: go to Computer – Settings – Exclusions/Low Risks – Scan Exclusions, then Signature Exclusions

Job done.

I presume this will also work for Norton 360 users – I recommend you check on the Internet first.

Anyone who wants more advice is welcome to PM me.

Hi Rod,

Will give this a go as mines taking 2 minutes to re-boot everytime I switch it on.
Do you set the exclusions for the full airnav system folder as mine is as follows :

C:DRIVE
PROGRAM FILES
AIRNAV SYSTEMS FOLDER
AIRNAV RADARBOX FOLDER
DATA/COLOUR/FOLDERS ETC.

Thanks

Mike.

The same advice applies to those using Microsoft Security Essentials ... exclude the ANRB folder from the scans.  Helps a lot!

Mike

The only exclusion path I've set is to the main AirNav Systems folder:

C:\Program Files\AirNav Systems

It will exclude all the sub-folders of that folder too.

Hope that helps

Remember that if you're running Vista or Win7, and have Radarbox installed in the default location
C:\Program Files\AirNav Systems\AirNav RadarBox
then you also need to setup a virus scanning exclusion for the equivalent folders in the Virtual Store
C:\Users\xxxxxxxx\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\AirNav Systems\AirNav RadarBox

Hi,

Did the exclusions for scan and real time no problem just added
 C:\Program Files\AirNav Systems
Can not add signature exlusions.
Click all brings up long list of virus names or so it appears with add/remove/risk settings, how did you add airnav ??
Or have I done it wrong.
Thanks again for all your help.
Mike.

Sorry, Mike, I don't think Signature exclusions are relevant here after all. It's the Scan exclusions that matter.

Has what you've done speeded up your system at all?

Hi,

Thought as much.
Yes a lot quicker booting up now.
Thanks again and keep up the brilliant work.
