Aircraft Detail
« on: October 11, 2009, 09:25:08 PM »
As we head towards Version 3 being rolled out we are looking to improve the aircraft database look up feature.

What we understand the main issues are:

1.) Airliners.net look up data is sometimes incorrect, does anyone have any examples of this (other than the "+" registration issues) ?

2.) Airnav online central database contains stale data

3.) Local database cannot be refreshed to pick up new updates of aircraft which have already been written.

Are there any other issues that you want looking at?

4. Need to supress all the "Untitled" entries in Company that come from airliners.net (I think).

5. Need to stop all the "..." that get populated into field AT - Aircraft Type.

6. Prevent overwriting of existing "good" data by "bad" data on Airnav servers.

7. Allow upload of user updates fields to the AirNav database, with perhaps a "reputation" flag, so if a user uploads bad data, that often gets corrected by other users, you could disregard updates from that user in future.

Similar to Tomtom's "mapshare" feature, this could be an "opt in" feature selectable individually (if/how much they are willing to trust user uploads)

Regarding 7 this is what we are looking at that. To have a online tool which alllows you to look at the AirNav database and and do updates which are then approved by a admin etc..

This should hopefully, mean we could try and remove point 2, 7 (3).
Point 1, 4, 5 needs code changing both server and client side.

6 is going to be the hard one.

Suggestion for point 6:

Add a marker field to the aircraft table that either gets updated automatically if the user updates the record, or that allows the user to manually mark the record. Either way, that record will not be subjected to automatic updates.

On a slightly different point, can you build into Database Explorer, if not a batch edit facility, at least a Find & Replace that would work on the current set of records?
