Gary, this is done via outlines. See this thread for the outlines of the EGCC holds:
http://www.airnavsystems.com/forum/index.php?topic=2803.msg24965#msg24965

You can find many more outlines following these links:
1. http://radarbox.gofreeserve.com/html/downloads.html
2. http://jetvision.de/sbs.shtml
3. http://www.homepages.mcb.net/bones/Kinetic/Utilities/Kinetic_Utilities2_Outlines.htm

Or just create you own outlines using Jordan Outline Maker:

If you just turned trail lines on wouldn't that plot the actual holding patterns of the aircraft?

You can make them stay on longer in File...Preferences.

Bear in mind too that the "racetrack" holding patterns that you see on some charts are only meant as approximations - the actual track flown by the aircraft on the day will vary with the wind and the aircraft's speed.

The only part that shouldn't normally change is the inbound track to the beacon.

Hi Lovemuscle,
I posted this in screenshots a while back, I had turned the trail lines up to 10000 in preferances, just to give you an idea.

Gary, as far as EGCC (Manchester) goes, you might have been thinking of the Google Earth video file that I posted on the ScreenShot forum, showing several aircraft being held at DAYNE, MIRSI and ROSUN one foggy morning. See http://www.airnavsystems.com/forum/index.php?topic=2063.0
