UMTS 3.5G internet connection issue
« on: August 29, 2008, 01:26:00 PM »
Hi,

I connected my RB to a computer that uses a 3.5G network 7.2Mbps connection. I can download Network flights fine but it seems it wont share my flights to the network. Is there a specific port I'm supposed to open or something on the router?

How do you know you are not sharing flights?

Another feeder saw no network flights in this part of the world. Right now there are only 2 of us running on the network the other two are done for a while.

Storm,

Beware that 7.2Mbps connection message that comes up when you connect to the 3G network.  I use a similar system here in the UK, Orange Internet Everywhere which uses a USB "modem" which is effectively a mobile phone complete with sim card in a USB stick.  The connected at 7.2Mbps refers to the connection between the PC and the USB 3G stick, not the connection speed you are getting over 3G.

My connection speed is around 384kbps most of the time out in the country!

Storm, you're very lucky there.

The 3G Broadband coverage here in the UK has been causing some disquiet from the users - who are few and far between, but are steadily growing.  I can't get any connectivity at my home and at the office I get "G" rather than "3G".  Connection speeds are about the same as dial-up.  It's fine for general web browsing and Email (when the Orange UK mail servers feel like it), but any downloads over a couple of Mb are just too slow.  RB functions OK with Network data download and sharing, but if the connection glitches, I do have problems.

In areas where there is good 3G network coverage, users are complaining that the speed is inconsistent - a bandwidth problem I'd guess.

Orange UK call the 3G connection "Internet Everywhere" - a bit optimistic I'd say.  I have a 3Gb monthly data limit - that's upload and download combined.  However, even leaving the connection on for 8 hours a day, the most I've managed to use in a month is 422Mb!

OK, so it's considerably better than nothing, especially as I'm going to be on the road for a couple of years and I don't want to be tied to a land-line Internet provider whilst I'm away.  I'm hoping that the system will mature and things will get better!
