Incorrect Distance Readings in My Flights
« on: July 13, 2008, 07:27:56 PM »
My RB has started giving incorrect distance readings on the next to last column in the My flights log. They are spot on if the plane is either east or west of home but about 50% out on north to south plots eg:- a plane on the 16.4 distance ring is reading as 24.2 in My Flights.
Only started doing this today, not had any previous problem since getting my Radarbax in March. The bearing angle in the last column is always correct by the way.
Anyone got any ideas as to the cause?

Cheers.

Hi,

How can you confirm they are out by 50%. We had a similar post a while ago and then they user realised it was spot on just that the different maps (spherical etc..) makes distances look different.

Thanks for the quick response AirNav.
I attached Image1.jpg which shows an actual screenshot and always use the same map format.

Can you save it as universal file such as .gif or a .jpg so we can view it?

You have saved it as .psp.

Hi there Support,

I know it's only about 24 hours since my last posting but as you generally come up with a solution to queries and problems in next to no time, I was wondering if you have an answer yet.

Sorry if I appear to be a bit impatient but I was hoping it would be something simple, perhaps some setting I have 'cocked up'

Regards

S.H.

Hi Hawkeye,

Sorry you reply got caught up in other posts and we missed it.

We are aware of an bug where by the heading and distance is not updated continuously and think its do with that. This has been corrected in the 1.6 version so we are checking to see whether we see any anomalies.

Thanks for your reply but the bug mentioned is not characteristic of my problem.

The distance and heading on both the map and data column are being updated and changing continuously but as stated in my first posting, one doesn't correlate with the other. As I said, the distance on the map according to the rings is over 50% less than is shown in the data column.
I also said that the map position and the distance data correspond E to W. There is only a discrepancy in planes N and S of 'home'. The bug you mention surely wouldn't differentiate in that way.

Taking the example of Flight CFE37L on the screenshot above, you will see that according to the radar rings, it is approx 25 miles away. Pulling the picture over by the scroll bar beneath shows it to be at at 38.9 miles in the distance column. Even if it was an update time problem this mileage difference is equivalent to a delay of over 3 mins!!  I think you will agree this would be ridiculous.

I feel sure that there is a simple answer to the problem, I'm convinced it is not related to update speed and I trust you will delve into this a bit deeper to find the solution.

Anybody else have any ideas?

Once again, regards,

S.H.

I’ve  found the answer as to why this was occuring and am now happily back to looking at a screen where the distance of all flights given in the data column correlates with the rings on the map.

Just in case anyone else encounters this problem, it occurred because I had inadvertently  changed my Map Projection setting from Mercator to Cartesian.

You will  see if you choose the Cartesian format,- having first turned the Mode-S Signal Maximum Range option on, and the Radar Rings option off, - and then click on the ‘Zoom min’ icon, that the map is projected from a point which  shows the Max Range in the form of an ellipse. On the  other two map formats it is circular.
Turn on the Radar Rings option and you will see they do not correspond, - they are circular, not elliptical. Hence the discrepency.

I suppose there must be a reason for giving users the  choice of a Cartesian map but it  would seem that nobody in the forum uses it or this problem would surely have come to light before.
Anyway, as the option is there, perhaps  Development will correct this anomaly in v1.6 or at least inform users of it in  the manual.

Great, thats what we thought it was realted too as mentioned in our earlier post in this thread.

We will see whether it possible to get the circles that way.
