Radarbox Classic VS NooElec RTL dongle....results
« on: March 17, 2016, 11:26:51 AM »
So for several weeks now, I have had 2 pc's running.  One with the Radarbox Classic, the other with a NooElec dongle from Amazon...

They were both connected to the same Antenna via a splitter.

The results are as follows....

Absolutely no difference for me between the 2 in terms of sensitivity.

For me, this is a testament of good build quality on the Radarbox Classic.

It is a great option to have in case my Radarbox classic box ever dies, I can be back up and running in minutes...

cheers,

Jason

Hi,

Yes please and which one you got and how it works. As I said thought it was just the aerial but that's been checked out and must be the box.
Thanks
Mike.

There is a NooElec dongle with 0,5ppm TCXO and R820T2 reveiver chip. That's the one I would purchase.

Quote from: amazon
NooElec NESDR Mini 2+ 0.5PPM TCXO RTL-SDR & ADS-B USB Receiver Set w/ Antenna & Remote Control, RTL2832U & R820T Tuner, MCX Input. Low-Cost Software Defined Radio Compatible with Many SDR Software Packages. R820T2 Tuner & ESD-Safe Antenna Input, Guaranteed

I've tested several DVB-T dongles based on R820T and R820T2 with standard oszillators. They do a good job and if you are using them with dump1090.exe you will be able to compensate the oszillator drift. During the first few month I had to alter the ppm value in dump1090 several times. After some hundred non stop running hours it got more stable.

If the dongle is used with ANRB.exe V6.00.000 off frequency compensation is not possible as ANRB.exe uses exclusive access to the dongle. Therefore I think it's a good idea to use a dongle with high accurate oszillator.

About range etc.: I had a slight higher range as with my classic box, but the classic box has already 59000 operation hours on it's shoulders.

V6.00.000 has some minor issues if operated with SDR dongles. But the most important "thing": operation stability over several days of non stop operation is available.

Alternate Zadig drivers needed to be installed to run the dongle.
You will need a SMA to MCX adapter if you want to connect the donlge to an already existing outside antenna installation.
