The airlines table is still used by the software to convert flightID recognition from two letter IATA to three letter ICAO so that the logo displays. 
For example if a Jazeera Airways flight displays a flightID J9***, the software will not display the logo unless the corresponding entries for Jazeera are in the airlines Navdata table linking J9 to the ICAO code JZR.
