Strong winds - High ground speeds - is this a record?
« on: December 24, 2011, 12:37:28 AM »
Compare the ground speeds of the southbound planes, plodding along at just over 300kts, and the northbound 744, whizzing along at nearly twice that. There are currently around 12 planes on the network doing over 600kts, all over the US eastern seaboard.

This might turn into a competition:

A pretty impressive ground speed for an EVA Air B744 off the south coast of Japan tonight - 800 mph! Well, 799.791716376362 mph if you want to quibble. It's not Santa miscoding, is it?

Anyone got a RadarBox screenshot of anything at all faster than that?

Well, I can now post a screenshot with a new speed record.

To be honest, I think there might be somethiing a little wrong with the SAS A340's transmission ;-)

(The RadarBox map changed to correctly read "Russia" just after I took the screenshot).

Hi Rod, it's a great shame that beautiful bird Concorde isn't still gracing our skies - that would be interesting to track!
ANRB :  AOR AR8000 : Icom R-7000 : Icom IC-R9000 : JRC NRD-545 : OptoElectronics Digital Scout and OptoLinx Interface; Realistic Pro-2005 : UBC 800XLT - listed in alphabetical order, not cost, preference, performance or entertainment value!

Very true, and an SR-71 Blackbird with ADS-B would be pretty good, too :-)

My wife and myself have just got back from Aruba flying with Thomson on a 767 and at one time we had a tailwind of 182mph ! which made the speed just over the 1000 k mark accordind to the captain.

This site is relevant to this thread.  It gives the highest Groundspeed ever photographed by commercial pilots for each type.

Between 700-750 knots seems to be the max (unless you are in Concorde)
