Jeremy, squawk codes are country dependent. In the UK 7000 means "Conspicuity code". A full list of UK codes can be found at http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/aip/current/enr/EG_ENR_1_6_en.pdf. See paragraph 2.2 "Mode A Conspicuity Code". Full list in paragraph 6.

Jeremy, I think you will be very lucky if you can find a list of Irish squawk codes (though you might expect them to be similar to the UK's). I have searched long and hard for lists of squawk codes on the internet. The only ones I came across were for The Netherlands and Turkey. You really need a friend in Irish Air Traffic Control to tell you which codes they allocate to pilots in their air space.

It means 'hey, look at me'

con·spi·cu·i·ty (knsp-ky-t)n.

The quality of being conspicuous; obviousness.

Broadly speaking, used by aircraft not receiving a service from any ATC unit, or being provided by a service from an ATC unit without SSR.  Used when no specific code has been issued by ATC.

Military aircraft in the low-flying system use 7001 so you know that they are not working an ATC unit and they might climb rapidly if the weather becomes unsuitable at low-level.
