TAF
« on: June 29, 2009, 08:56:41 PM »
I am not sure how you would read the following forecast, I would be grateful if someone could translate this so I could learn how to understand it.

Example

2009/06/29 17:03
TAF EGPH 291703Z 2918/3018 07009KT 0400 FG VV///
      TEMPO 2918/3018 3000 -DZ BR BKN001 PROB30
      TEMPO 3010/3018 9999 NSW SCT030

Cheers

TAF is basically weather forceast for the next 12 hours.

EGPH 291703Z 2918/3018 07009KT 0400 FG VV///

07009KT. Wind is from 070 at 9kts.
FG = Means Fog
VV = Usually this says the visibility in metres.

The next few lines are weather in a specfic time in the next 12 hours.

TEMPO 2918/3018 3000 -DZ BR BKN001 PROB30

- Temopary 3000 metres visbilty. -DZ means light drizzle. Then cloud details BKN001 means Broken at 100ft and PROB30 means probalilty 30%.

Hope that gives you a quick translation.

Try this link:

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lot/aviation/tafcode.php

And this document:

http://www.uscg.mil/auxiliary/missions/auxair/metar_taf.pdf

This should give you a good start.

Just had a thought; would it be possible to have the option to get decoded TAFs using RB like the current option to get decoded METARS?
