First real tryout
« on: February 08, 2009, 02:45:48 PM »
Well, today I have been to Copenhagen airport and was at the end of 4l -22r and the reception was brilliant, I put the antenna on top of the car and it could see as far a Stockholm to the north, Lubeck to the south but the east and west were not too good for some reason or other.
I noticed two wierd things (dont forget that I am a NOOB at this lark).

1: The only planes that I could pick up on the ground were heavys.
2: The planes which I picked up on the ground were all reported at 550 feet. (EKCH has an elv. 16ft)

Does anybody have an explenation for these things....

Thanks.

On your second question, did you setup Copenhagen airport in SmartView of RB so that it had the correct QFE for that airport?  Alternatively, you'd need to know the barometric pressure to enter the correct QFE manually in RB preferences to get correct altitudes on the ground.

Going mobile is an excellent way of using the Radarbox, I plan on doing it more this summer.  But, always worth trying to get the right QFE entered, even when mobile.

RB uses the QNH - Pressure setting, should be sent by ATC to ALL incoming flights as current GROUND Pressure Setting.
Based in Hexham - Tyne Valley
Best view for RB is North of a line between EGNT and EGNC  - includes OTA and Spade, to EGPH above 7500ft.   Can be TRUE mobile with Mobile Broadband feed to Network.

If you have Mobile Internet access, then the RB unit will get the current data from the weather reports, via the InterNet.
You will NOT need to set the QNH , in most cases.
A QNH of around 998 should normally be reasonable setting.
Current report via RB gives 995 for EKCH

Answered in other thread.  Autoset QNH to Leeds Bradford (EGNM) in SmartView.

hi

First the disclaimer.  I am an enginner not a pilot and I am doing some of this from memory.  Standard pressure setting of 1013.2 is above transition level.  Transition level is set for different places do to height of local ground.  So we are talking Flight Level not height.  35000 feet is FL 350.  Below Transition the QNH is set.  Regeonal QNH setting is changed on the hour and is the highest sea level pressure for the region plus a bit for safety.  Airfield QNH will give height above sea level and and will read airfield height at touch down.

QFE will read 0 on touch down.

Most civil air liners now use QNH for landing.  In the old days the pilot not flying would have his instrument set to QFE and call, in calm and clear way, 30 feet at the appointed time.  What goes up must come down.

Now the radalt does that. So no need for QFE.

QFE still used by light aircraft, helicopters and Military.
