There you go...I knew it wouldn't be long before I was posting questions and I don't even have an RB yet!

The one system I saw RB running on (not sure of the spec) seemed to be quite slow?

I mean simple things like clicking on the menu bar gave rise to more than a couple of seconds delay before the program responded.

Redrawing maps/zooming also resulted in considerable delays.

Was this just a system specific issue or is RB generally slow to respond?

I had to ask as things like this drive me crazy...man of little patience you see...

For the record I have earmarked an older Dual 3GHz Xeon with 4GB RAM and 1.25TB RAID to run RB on...the graphics card is a Quadro4 980XGL with 128MB RAM running in an 8X AGP slot - would this config be compatible with RB?

Is RB Dual Processor aware and if so will this have any advantage over a single processor?

Is there any advantage to running RB into Dual Monitors?
Radar screen on one monitor and logs or something on another?
I already have a dual monitor setup and I have already seen the SBS-1 running this way and it looked good...

One feature (the only feature?) that appealed about the SBS-1 was the scanner interface - are there any plans to look at adding a feature similar to this in a future release of RB?

Also the Alert feature built into RB is a great idea - does anyone think this might be expanded in future to notify by SMS text message in addition to the email function already being used?

End of questions...:-)

Thanks & regards,
-=Glyn=-

Hi Glynn,

Your machine will easily handle RadarBox. Just try download 1.5 and try the demo mode. There is another version coming out soon which should improve any slowness but in your case your computer is easily fast enough to handle it (probably expect 10-25% CPU usage at max)

Just read your other post, you probally saw RadarBox in action at dealership which is not our dealer list and hence I would not trust them to sell or display RadarBox at an advantage to other products.

Not sure what you mean about Dual features, you can't move any of the windows inside RadarBox 2008 outside of its main window.

We do not plan to have a scanner interface at the moment.

The alert function allows customizable commands, so with a bit of luck you could setup a SMS text service.

There's occasional reports on this forum of RB running slow.  These are often explained by having RB configured to upload aircraft to the Airnav network whilst having no internet connection.  I guess it depends what version you saw running, and whether it was internet connected.

My system is a 2.8ghz Pentium, with 2gb of RAM, and RB averages 7% of CPU.

I NEVER see any slow responses, even when connected to the network with 800+ aircraft download.  But then I am in a low-volume traffic area!!

I don't know if RB is dual processor aware, or whether it can use dual monitors.

I don't think there's any plans for a scanner interface, but it's a good idea.  Airnav are always open to suggestions, so probably worth adding to the "Wish List" thread.

Glyn,

Tis me, from the other side again!

Boy, they don't take any prisoners do they - anyway, enough of that and on with the business.  Lets see if I can answer your questions.

There is an issue with the release version of RadarBox, in that if you run it without an Internet connection and have "Share Data" selected in Preferences, RB tries to upload your data and can't.  Whilst it's thinking about this, it slows down the menus.  The easy fix here is to deselect Share Data and the delay goes away.  The default setting is Share Data, so you needed to deselect this each time RB was run.  The latest beta, soon to be released, has fixed this problem completely, so it doesn't matter if you forget to deselect it.

At the moment, on my 2 GHz AMD 64 PC with 1 Gb of RAM running XP home, I've got RB running, I've got 4 tabs open in FireFox, I've got MS Word 2007 open at a document I'm working on, my Watson W-8681 weather station is feeding USB data to the PC which is being displayed by Weather Display, I'm running Weather display Live to display that weather information in a Flash window on the PC, I'm running 2 LCD monitors from my GeoForce 8500 graphics card and I'm FTPing a jpg picture up to one on me websites every 60 seconds - and my wife says I can't multi-task :-0

With all this going on, RadarBox is running like a dream, processing my Live data and displaying Network data.  My laptop is a similar spec to the desktop and RB runs fine on that too.

I don't have a dual processor, so I can't answer that, but I don't think that the software has been written to take advantage of such a setup.

You can't split (undock) the RB windows, although this is something that a few of us would love, so full use could be made of dual monitors.  I tend to have RB running on the bigger monitor, and do everything else on the smaller one.  I still don't have enough monitors though, expecially when I'm running the PCR-1500 radio scanner.

OK, that brings us nicely on to the subject of scanners.  I paid the extra to have the "Radio Interface" on the SBS-1.  It's only a software key that allows the radio to work with the SBS-1.  The SBS-1 radio interface has it's good points.  You can right click on an airfield and see a frequency list.  Clicking on a frequency tunes the radio - great so far.  You can manually alter these frequency lists using a simple text editor.

Where it becomes more difficult is with the Area or en-route frequencies.  Although these are nominally allocated to specific areas, these frequencies are often "bandboxed" or one frequency used for two or more areas.  At night when there isn't much traffic, there might only be a couple of frequencies in use for the whole of the UK en-route system.  As the SBS-1 interface needs an area for you to right click on to bring up the list, it all gets a bit difficult unless you have every frequency in the list - a bit pointless really.  You can have all these frequencies in a drop down list from the menu, but the same problem exists - just what do you put in the list?

Added to this, you can only listen to one frequency at a time.  Yes, I paid for the radio key and I did run it with my AOR 8000 scanner, but I was missing a lot because I was only listening to one frequency.  In the end, I used a 3rd party scanning program to drive the radio, and left the SBS-1 to watch the aeroplanes.

Now that I have the excellent Icom PCR-1500 PC driven scanner, I use this in just the same way with Radarbox.  I listen to all the frequencies and watch all the aircraft!  Some people will find this confusing, but if I hear something interesting, then I just halt the scan.

So, is a scanner interface needed?  It really depends what you want to do.  The easy answer is "I want to click on an aircraft and hear what it's saying" - now that would be good, but it's impossible to achieve.  Now, if the aircraft were transmitting the frequency they were on along with the other Mode S data, this would be a dream come true.  Unfortunately, that's not the case.

Right, that's enough rambling from me, hope this helps a bit. Time for a cold beer :-)

Now This I like the sound of. Any chance of something similar for the RadarBox??

GlynH, if it is of any help I'n currently using Windows XP on a single core machine. What I did was to close down any 'Non-system essential' programs/services, defrag the hard drive and check the Startup menu to diable anything non essential.

I have set the 'Screen Refresh Rate' in the RadarBox software from 1000 equivelant to 1 second to 250. This allows a pretty much constant aircraft screen update without no lag. (dunno if this is entirely necessary, but it works for me pretty well)

I have also set the colour of the 'Aircraft Trail' to white - this gives the impression of an aircraft smoke trail - which I have then set to display for 60 secs.

I have also set 'Photo download' option to download only 1 pic instead of 2, this seems to slow my comp up a little when the 2 photos options checked - maybe an increase in the network traffic flow to n from the comp. (The results maybe different on other peoples comp, these are just some options which I found worked for me, thought I'd share".

With My settings applied as above and a bit of PC system maintainence the comp seems to handle to RadarBox Software pretty well with hardly any slow down.
