Title: Grounding your external Airnav Antenna? Who has done it?
Post by: CYYZGUY on June 24, 2014, 03:37:38 PM
Just wondering here how many people have properly grounded their external antenna?

Would this help in terms of your SAW filter going bad? What else can get zapped from static inside the box?

I have my mast grounded via copper wire into a copper grouding rod 4 feet into the ground.

cheers,

In Germany there is a regulation, that any kind of external antenna has to be connected to the foundation earth electrode. Thefore I have done so.

SAW filter: I would say it's a yes/no. Yes: Discharges over the groundplane (to signal conductor) are much more impropable as without a connection to grounding. No: If the static builds up inside antenna and discharges over signal conductor.

What else can be fried: Depends on voltage and the quantity of electric charge involved in the static discharge. Worst case scenario: A direct lightning hit in your external ADS-B Antenna: This will fry your box and your PC.

While it may not minimise the damage to your box if you receive a direct lightning strike, it may go some way to reducing the damage to your home.  If there is a chance of a thunderstorm in the area, removing the antenna connection from your box is the only safe method of avoiding damage to the box.
