Title: Network Server - Update
Post by: AirNav Development on January 06, 2013, 05:26:54 AM
We continue imporving our server system by adding some new redudant devices and faster processors.
Because of this we've again changed IP address for our main server which my cause connection problems to some users during the next 24 hours. We apologize for this fact.

The good news is that we are signficantly improving our infrastructure to enable further growth on our AirNav RadarBox and ShipTrax networks.

The last time it was a week before your new address was propagated to ISPs in Canada. Can you suggest a public DNS server that I can use until things stabilize and what is the new address?
Title: Re: Network Server - Update
Post by: AirNav Development on January 06, 2013, 06:23:02 AM
The new server is located at 74.55.96.226
Ask you ISP to do a DNS flush.

You can also do this on your computer by going to your command prompt and type:
ipconfig /flushdns

DNS propagation should never take more than 24 hours.

AN,

As you say, connections to the server are especially slow today however there would appear to be an additonal problem in that the 'logos' page had entries for yesterday the 5th January which do not appear to be there today the 6th January. The last entries go back to the 4th January or have the 5th January entries been moved or accidentally deleted by the server problems ?

Eventually got this to post !

Got the forum back by copying 74.55.96.226 into the address bar.  Is there anway of doing the same for RB and getting the network back?

You can always use Googles Public DNS, see https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/

Unable to use 3D (again !!) even though the status on the AirNav website says online.

I would now like some information/ reassurance from AirNav Systems as to the future reliability  of being able to use the 3D aspect of my aircraft monitoring setup. No 3D, no need of Radarbox, simple as that. Quite frankly, since before Christmas the service from AirNav Systems has not been what I would expect.

I am well aware of the reasons why these out outages have taken place. I have no interest in the web based offering being developed at the moment and as mentioned in a post from the RB24 forum:

Quote
RadarBox24.com and AirNav RadarBox (the hardware system) are completely different solutions.

It seems unfair that one product should impact on the other.

From an increasingly dissatisfied customer.

No network here - not an IP issue
Title: Re: Network Server - Update
Post by: AirNav Development on January 06, 2013, 04:46:32 PM
We are still waiting for the new IP to be propagated all over the world. Theoretically it could take up to 48 hours.
We have our extrenal/outsourced monitoring devices and we see that is has propgated to 75% of locations right
now.

The network is fully working but couldn't be available until propagation is finished. Every single feature (3D etc) will of course be fully working after this server upgrades are finished (in 24-48 hours) and we will be ready to solve any extra pending issues that might happen.

I can understand that network servers go down occasionally, but I do have a concern about some aspects of AirNav products where we've paid a one-off, up front fee, that will only work with a live connection to AirNav servers:
    - Radarbox 3D functionality.
    - ShipTrax (the 2 or 4 week rule).

Maybe AirNav should redesign these products to be more tolerant to server/network failures.  Something for me to test in the next beta(s).

Thats exactly what we are doing, the last server issue over xmas should not have happened. We are now investing in having multiple server and network points so if there is a failure on one we can use the other instantly to limit downtime.

The RadarBox 3D is Google license limitation.

Just to confirm the network server is online and working, if its not accessible from your location its due to the IP propogation. Try and flush your DNS or restart your machine and it should try and pick up the latest DNS entries your ISP has.

Is anyone actually getting network traffic.  I carried out a DNS flush yesterday and today and restart my machine each day and still no network here on the BT Internet around 30 hours after the change.

Paul,

Are you normally able to get 3D without an internet connection.  I can't as the software is unable to access the server so dont get the option for 3D, same as with no Airnav network.

So unless the network server is working you wont get 3D whether you subscribe to the network or not.

I am well aware of that. I was simply pointing out that the 3D functionality is not working contrary to what is stated on the AirNav Systems status page, ie "Online"

Still, it's nice to see that the Radarbox24 website is working OK so the the world can get info/data OK but those that choose to pay cannot, strange eh !!

Cheers

Paul

PS Have just fired up my laptop and the 3D is not available on that aswell.

Here's an interesting one, I was just checking the Network Status page on the AirNav Systems website, did a page refresh (F5 key in IE9) when the status indicators changed, did it a few times in quick succession and got different results each time !

Have attached 3 snips of the webpage after refreshing ! Wow ! I can get the network status to read what I like !!

We will have one of our developers looking at this thread.

We continue to monitor this situation. It seems the new IP DNS propagation is taking longer than expected and we are checking this at this time. The server is working OK and no delays/outages in network data.

For those who want to know what is DNS propagation:

For those who are unable to connect please try and ping www.airnavsystems.com (You can this by running the command prompt tool and then ping www.airnavsystems.com )

If the IP address listed is not 74.55.96.226 then it means your DNS has not been updated by your ISP, this should occur soon (time depends on your ISP)

Hi Development,

Just tried and received perfect ping responses from www.airnavsystems.com as 74.55.96.226. But no network here.

And please explain me one simple thing. As far as I see, RB24 works perfectly. So, our local machines know which server address they need to send their local traffic information to display on RB24. Why can't this server send full network information to our machines?  Is it a different server?

I am looking into why 3D authorization isn't working for those users that are pinging the correct IP address (74.55.96.226). I will post an update as soon as I have more information.

Also getting correct ping response in UK but still no normal network -  (Don't have 3D anyway) Appreciate this is about upgrades - however could we not have a post on the discussion forum telling us when and how long you intend network to be down if work is planned (if you did I'm afraid I missed it). Then we won't feel the need to be checking all day to see what is wrong with the network - and obviously not finding the forum to find out - looking forward to the return of a secure connection ...

Could those of you that have RadarBox3D please try again and tell me if you can now launch RB with the 3D enabled now? The "network data" is a different problem and I'm still looking into this issue. If you prefer, you can email me directly at [email protected] if you feel email is more convenient for you (I will post a summary here in this topic so nothing gets lost by communicating via email outside of the forum).

Thanks for testing Alan & Paul. The new server appears to have a different header response to all network requests and it's causing a problem on the client software. I am working to see if I can get the header to match what it was on the previous server. I may need you to try again shortly.

Airnav 3D Dev,

I get the correct Ping response of 74.55.96.226, but no network.  I do however get the 3D button and it works OK.
Please reboot all your servers to fix this asap, as Im getting bored looking at a blank screen.

Can I ask that you add 3D tumbleweed to the radarbox screen, when your network goes down in the future  ;-)

This is getting beyond a joke !!!!

Also still no explanation as to why when I refresh the Network Status page on the website I get different messages almost every time. Do you have a random message generator or something ? Or are you hosting the website with different hosts and I am picking up old pages ?

Anyway, you certainly seem to have your work cut out, best of luck ! I think I shall be investing in another brand receiver very soon and happily share my data with another network.

Come in from work and pleased to see network is up again ...

...In the last 10 minutes my newtwork flights have gone from 1026 down to 2 - long enough that map cleared - back up to 1026. then again a few minutes later flights dropped to 4 then 1 and back up again. As I type lost network again - no flights ---. Anyone else having issues.   Is work still ongoing on the server saga or is it still not properly mended yet?

Mike there is a problem with a part of the server.  Consultants are being brought in to look at it to unearth the problem and recify it.  It has been causing minor outages as you describe which is annoying but is still giving a service.

A small udpate on the work we are developing on our server: we are still, on a daily basis, developing and fine tuning some new software to be used on our main flight data server. It is much more stable now in terms of data processing but some taks remain to be done which may cause some data outages.

We will keep our user base posted when we have more news.

Just a quick update: we are still working on our server and will continue during the next few days.
Things are much more stable now but we are still fine tuning many routines/algorithms. We don't expect any more serious network downtimes.

Again we would like to, in the name of our team, say thanks for all your patience regarding all this work.
Development work continues as we expect to bring RadarBox to the iPad and iPhone soon.

At the same time we will have very good news for the RadarBox/Windows users.

Bob,

When you state plain white picture what do you mean.  I am getting photos to display if there is one.  Does it show downloading photo then photo not available then either shows a phot or then the previous wording disappears.  Looks like the photo not available should stay here this is appropriate if that is the case.

Hi Alan

this was purely on new pictures not already in my folder...

was checking network flights early this morning & it went through the pic d/load process & looked like it had downloaded a picture but nothing showed, not even the "photo not available" text, I thought that a bit strange as I was also getting "not available" on other airframes as I was looking through......... so on checking my photos folder I found about 20 odd blank/white pics the same dimensions as the photos????

cheers

Quick curious question since i'm not really getting much of a response on the FB group. This doesn't really have anything to do with Radarbox either but I don't see another forum for other AirNav products. With 1 % traffic setting I get accurate flights. But with 100% I get flights that haven't flown in days, months or years. What is the sweet spot?

Its the same for me as well, I haven't had an alert since January 5th.  It would be nice to get some sort of response from an AirNav employee as to what is going on specifically with the email alerts, since its the primary feature I use, being that I have a life away from my Nav box, and home desk.

Title: Re: Network Server - Update

We have stated that it is being investigated and we hope to have this rectified soon. There is no need to keep posting asking us the same question, as advised earlier we will post once we have rectified the issue.
Title: Re: Network Server - Update
Post by: NE1C4NSC4N on January 16, 2013, 01:29:14 PM
Considering the money we all paid for the Hardware/Software package, the same money that goes into your pocket, I think that warrants us a bit of patience, candor, and some further explanation in regards to the issue on your part, AirNav Support.

We all know your "investigating the issue".. some details would be nice.. and an ETA other than "soon" might be in order as well. That might even get some people to stop asking the same questions...over and over. Just a thought..

Title: Re: Network Server - Update
Post by: AirNav Support on January 16, 2013, 01:46:06 PM
There is no ETA as of yet as we are still trying to rectify the issue.

The technical issue: As you may recall we had issues with alerts, emails in the past with many not being sent. Some customers have setup there alerts to send emails as soon as new flight is picked up, in total with many RadarBoxes across the world such a large amount of alert emails being sent this puts extreme pressure on the server/mail server to cope with this load. Many ISPs then indentify us as spam mail server incorrectly. We had created a different way to handle this situation on our old server.

The new server we are using now, this needs to be redeveloped to handle the differences in the server setup. We are doing our best to get this changed and isn't a simple "flick the switch" job.

For the future the new software version will have an option to bypass our servers for mails and for the customer to use there own mail server.

Thank you AirNav Support, I appreciate the detailed update.  Sorry I was a bit cranky in my previous post, just missing my alerts and not enough coffee yet. One of those mornings.

And my apologies if all that info was clearly stated somewhere else previous, I haven't seen it, there's lots going on for you guys right now with the new site/service, and lots to read to get all the details. The ideas being thrown around about RB24 Beta and all look promising.

The idea's for the new software sound great too!

Thank you again.

>>

That will be the way to go.  With the JSTARS app you can put in your ISP SMTP details and its alerts are sent direct from your ISPs mail servers.

Hi AN Support
Here version 4.03 ... not working daily log emails since 2012 ... from 3 different computers..
Even when Automatic Report Log always says that it was sent OK... same thing in manual send...
Radarbox always says "Message Sent with success" ... but obviously it does not says to whom or to were
the email was sent....
Nor automatic, nor manual nor to yahoogroups nor to any other email account.
AN changed Server to a new IP address .. to 96.31.64.2 ...

So it seems that AN receives data from our radarboxes log ...  but we unhappily NO !
Obviously it is not due to some problem in my firewall o something else here ....

So... why not to AN do "an elegant" fix to this cumbersome situation and release a version on which
every RB user will be allowed to choose by his own the way on sending his emails only to whom he own wants  and in doing so, everyone will stay only with his own problems and we .. the users will at last
have the emails working ... same for alerts   ..

Cheers : Juan

Looking back that is one calendar month that alerts and logs emails have been down.  Which is circa 8% of the year.  Consequently airnav will only get 92% reliability for the year max in 2013 for that part of the system.

I still get the "blank" images and I analyzed the HTTP-post to the servers, it looks like this:
Node 1: IP = xxx.xxx.x.xxx, TCP port = 4918
Node 2: IP = 96.31.64.2, TCP port = 80

GET /cgi-bin/ANLV_SV/ANLV_SV_user.exe?usgetphoto=0&usverify_name=PGANRBxxxxxx&usversion=ANRB403&regsearch=SE-ISY&modes=4A8130 HTTP/1.1
Content-Type: text/html
Host: www.airnavsystems.com
Accept: text/html, */*
User-Agent: Mozilla/3.0 (compatible; Indy Library)

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Sat, 02 Feb 2013 11:46:42 GMT
Server: Apache/2.2.23 (Win32) PHP/5.3.20
Content-Length: 395
Content-Type: text/html

<ANLVStart>OK;http://www.airnavsystems.com/cgi-bin/ANLV_SV/Photo/SE-ISY-1B1PIGHNSR.jpg;340A-080;Saab 340A(QC);NextJet;Lars Baek;http://www.planespotters.net/Aviation_Photos/photo.show?id=131709&source=rb24;SE-ISY;OK;http://www.airnavsystems.com/cgi-bin/ANLV_SV/Photo/SE-ISY-53TZRT6TQ1.jpg;340A-080;Saab 340A(QC);NextJet;Planespotters.net;http://www.planespotters.net/&source=rb24;SE-ISY<ANLVEnd>

Now checking the URL given i the HTTP-post gives this:
http://www.airnavsystems.com/cgi-bin/ANLV_SV/Photo/SE-ISY-1B1PIGHNSR.jpg -> blank image
http://www.airnavsystems.com/cgi-bin/ANLV_SV/Photo/SE-ISY-53TZRT6TQ1.jpg -> blank image
http://www.airnavsystems.com/cgi-bin/ANLV_SV/Photo/SE-ISY.jpg -> gives a correct image

http://www.planespotters.net/Aviation_Photos/photo.show?id=131709&source=rb24 [correct URL]
http://www.planespotters.net/&source=rb24 [incorrect URL (Error 404), although it's in the NAVDATA-db that way]

Just a reflection, maybe it can bring some light to the problem...

Done some more digging on the "blank" image problem and it seems to be related to entries in the NAVDATA d/b.
The one thing in common on the aircraft that have "blank" images downloaded is that one or both photolinks is
"incorrect", i.e. it has a link like "http://www.planespotters.net/" or "http://www.planespotters.net/&source=rb24".

Aircraft with both links correct is downloaded properly.

So a cleanup of incorrect LK & LK2 entries in the aircraft table are needed.

Quote from: Runway 31

Something must have went wrong on the migration from airliners.net -> planespotters.net. I see several entries in the aircraft table that have column LK/LK2 as "http://www.planespotters.net/" or "http://www.planespotters.net/&source=rb24". These field should be "blanked" out. Being a programmer myself and using databases in my work, this seems to me like a "one-liner" of code for Airnav to fix on the central server (where I image the NAVDATA d/b is built from). If these incorrect field values are corrected then no image will download and the program will automatically show "Photo not available". :-)

Ps. Alan I  think you missed my entry regarding 3964E6 in the database update request thread Ds.

I'm not an expert but have you checked your PTR records with your ISP as on using the link below you don't seem to have any?

http://emailtalk.org/PTR.aspx

No PTR record can cause emails to be treated as spam.

Title: Re: Network Server - Update

A small update regarding the email alert system failure: we know exactly what the problem is and we've been working hard to find a way of having it corrected. It is an incompatibility between the procedure used on the RadarBox windows client software and our new internet server. We have 1 expert in the internet server software working daily to try to fix it and we are trying to find different solutions.

The only alternative would be to upgrade the current RadarBox windows client software with a new version: something that will happen soon but that we don't want to happen just because of this problem.

So work continues and we will let you know when we have more news. rest assured that we giving our best to correct this situation as fast as we can.

Is this issue actually going to get fixed or not.  Been long enough now for your customers to suffer

Instead of relying on your crumbly sever system perhaps you should release a patch that allows users to be able to send alerts/emails using their own servers.

Come on support.  Lift your game now
Title: Re: Network Server - Update
Post by: AirNav Support on February 12, 2013, 10:05:22 AM
As mentioned above in Devs post, we don't want to do that at this stage, we would idealy like to rectify the server and release a new version later with the various changes that have been tested.
Title: Re: Network Server - Update
Post by: mista uzi on February 13, 2013, 12:10:51 AM
Guess what.  Ideally we would like you to fix the problem.  In my opinion your product and more so your support and ability to service your customers is becoming just a joke.

About time you came clean to the extent of the issue and provide your CUSTOMERS the common courtesy and provide us, YOUR CUSTOMERS a timeline to a resolution.  Enough of the lame excuses..

If you cant fix your problem then about time you seriously thought about releasing a suitable and workable workaround.

We have, finally, good news.
After a long battle with software development companies that we use on our server we found a solution for the bug that caused the Alert feature not to work properly.

We are testing it on our secondary server and if all goes OK we will have the alert feature ready withing 24 hours.
Tks again for all your patience with this issue.

Title: Re: Network Server - Update
Post by: N9JIG on February 14, 2013, 12:55:39 AM
Thanks, I can also confirm it is working now. I appreciate all the work involved in fixing this!

I would like to suggest as a feature for the next version of the user application (or a service pack...) that you allow a user to use his own mail server if they have one. Perhaps a simple check box with the default to use your server and if the box is checked the user is prompted to enter his mail server info.

This might reduce the load on your server somewhat as well as allowing those of us with the resources and know-how to bypass your server.

Maybe, but Alert and Log sending to Aol was working before the big crash. On the other hand, that's the reason why l have concidered to use two mail addresses in the first place.
As for the daily Log I've established a daily routine using my remote access. But anyway it would be great, if it will work with all Mail addresses again.

Open Explorer, go to the Photo folder (located: \Radarbox\Data\Photo), change view into details. Then sort on the Size column, select all photos that are 1 KB, then delete them.

The correct photo will then populate the next time.

Clicking the populate button will download quicker than waiting to pick up the aircraft the next time.

Just to say that the following problems would now appear to be rectified :

Proper thumbnails of aircraft and not blanks are being received.

The direct connection from clicking on the thumbnails to the planeplotters site is working. The actual aircraft picture may be different from the one being clicked but the aircraft shown is correct.

The direct connection to the forum via the forum tab is now working. (I haven't had that working for some time).

However, the quotes tab on the forum site is still not working.

Thanks for all the hard work in rectifying the problems.

Well they are certainly still coming from that source. Although they seem to be coming from Airliners also which will make some people happy

Hi Alan

Clicking the populate button never refreshes my photo's.  Is there another step that I'm not aware of maybe?

Also, why are some pictures coming from Airliners.net and some from Planespotters.net?  I would like all my pictures to download from Airliners.net.  Can I do this?

Paul,

As after pressing the populate button The information pop up states "X aircraft updated.  Once all pending photos/aircraft information ....etc.  I was under the impression photos of aircraft were downloaed in a similar manner to the other info.

I populated yesterday after carrying out a deletion of the blanks as per Niklas and I have photos downloaded with yesterdays date which I assumed came from the populate as I dont have have photos showing on my screen.

Regarding your other query I wouldnt think there would be a way of choosing where your photos come from.

Hi Alan

I also deleted all my 1 kb photo blanks and yes they do populate properly now when the aircraft is contacted again so that is fixed.  I emptied all my photos hoping they would now start to populate from Airliners.net and some do but some still come from Planespotters.net.  As for the populate and waiting for a refresh well that has never worked.  Maybe someday.  Oh how I have patiently waited for an update all these years....

Also just to clarify I love the photo's from Planespotters.net but most domestic and regional aircraft on this side of the pond are not available or are so outdated from them.  Airliners.net is much better for us over here.
