Title: RadarBox Worldwide Installation Photos
Post by: AirNav Development on November 29, 2012, 10:08:04 PM
With this new topic we intend to share photos of RadarBox installation photos all over the world.
With the constant growth of our network we are adding on a weekly basis new stations, sometimes in remote stations covering areas where aircraft were not tracked before.

Feel free to tell us more about your RadarBox installation in this topic and share some photos with our other users.

Below we share photos of RadarBox brand new reception station located in Faial Island, Azores, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. We recorded flights almost 400 NM away from the station location and because of it we've significantly improved our coverage of the Central Atlantic (flights from Southern Europe to the US and from all Europe to the Caribbean).

Hope you enjoy it.

Title: My Setup and My Quest!
Post by: CYYZGUY on December 06, 2012, 05:02:37 PM
A few years ago, when I purchased my airnav radarbox, my quest was to get my antenna as high as possible for the best possible range!  I am only a few km's away from Canada's larges airport (CYYZ) Toronto Pearson International.  After years, I finally struck a deal with my landlord and he allowed me to put my ADS-B antenna on the Roof of my apartment.  It is now sitting pretty at 115Ft (35 Meters)  I have a clear range of 300 Nm, with spikes approaching 400 Nm.  I find it truly amazing, looking out the window at the approach to CYYZ and following the planes to touchdown on Airnav.  Now I get amazing ground returns as well.

Below are the pictures of my setup!

Here is my installation photos from my location Motala, Sweden.

The high antenna is a WiMo GP-1090 with pre-amplifier AS-1090 with AS-1090BT and Ecoflex-10 (10m+1m) cables.
The lower antenna is a Diamond D-777 for ACARS and listening on ATC/Fighter Control frequencies.

I see around 240nm in the west/east direction and approx 150-200nm in the north/south direction.
I'm covering the southern part of Sweden, parts of Norway, Denmark and the Baltic Sea.

Hi Forum,

My new pole with the new FLU-SR/Y13 antenna. Playing with antennas is one part of the hobby. The installation is receiving signals from up to 156 NM. From Waldshut-Tiengen in Germany to Trento in Italy. The next step would be to move the mountains.

Hi Guys,

here are 2 pics of my final setup in Rethymnon, Greece (PGANRB300799). On the left is my Diamond F-23 antenna (2M TX/RX), then I have a Diamond D-777 antenna (Civil and Military Air-band Base RX) antenna and finally the AirNav MODE-S/ADSB antenna. Right now I am getting excellent results, except towards the south. After testing various setups I came to the conclusion, that the high mountains are to blame ;-)

Hi, first post here, thought it best to show my setup. Originally installed Piaware, then added RadarBox24 to duplicate coverage. Was having trouble with the receiver dongle, would lose sensitivity shortly after starting up, but adding heatsinks to the receiver chip and USB chip seems to have alleviated that issue.
Running about 100' LMR-400 feedline from the RPI dongle to the antenna which is up about 50' HAAT. The image shows the antenna beside the anemometer. This is a FlightAware 1090 antenna recently purchased through Amazon, and seems to work adequately. Note the parabolic antenna nearby; it does affect coverage to the WSW somewhat. It is required for our ISP for our internet service located about 10 mi away.
I also have a passband filter installed to help mitigate interference from the nearby ISP radio and local cell tower(s).

I've built an 8 element colinear antenna for 1090 since installing the storebought antenna, I might eventually switch antennas around to see how it works once we get a break in the weather. (blizzard here today).

Cheers from the center of Canada!

Well, almost a year ago and before I've re-located my antenna (2-3 higher) and switched to a DPD Productions ADS-B Vertical Outdoor Base Antenna.

In march 2018 with old antenna setup it took about one day (24h) to build up the tracks like seen in the picture.

Today (on a busy friday) I get the same result within about 12to 18 hours.

Hi Ingo, certainly a good number of tracks.    After several years absence, I'll shortly be returning to the fold, with improved coverage as my antennas will be higher and in the clear.

Hi Guys,

This is my installation:
I have used a 3 meters pole mast 1" galvanized pipe for 4 antennas, 3 ADSB antennas (Xrange2, PF and FR24) and one D130J discone antenna.

The radars I have put inside an PVC box to protect from bugs and for aesthetic purposes.
The installation  have also an Ethernet switch with 5 ports and will have a small cooler fan to avoid overheating in the summer.

If you have some suggestion for the fan to use, I will appreciate that.

Best regards,
Manuel S.

P.S.- Please see the next post

The filter wont necessarily result in an increase in range but if it works will enable better messages.

I know but, because I have a cellphone tower nearby, the filter will help I hope.
On Discone antenna the filter as decrease the number of aircraft's tracked, I don't know why.

Not too interesting with only the box itself... I put up a second receiver at home a few days ago, excellent reception although I live in the lowest area of the country. “Vinnant 1090” and H155 cable maybe a bit too long, 15 m. I am thinking about adding a filter to enhance the signal, the interference from mobile networks is quite strong. Good reception, a cheap solution but fun.

Spent the bank holiday on the roof replacing my useless, rusted old TV pole with a new mast. Airnav ADS-B and Comet AB-380 airband antennas on a custom stainless steel bracket that took some serious effort to get into shape.

I'm in almost the highest point in town and with the mast clear of all of the surrounding rooftops (10m above street, 124m AMSL). Seem to get particularly good coverage North and West towards the Irish Sea and Scotland, but Peak District hill shadow to the East. The polar plot covers nearly the whole of the England and most of the UK after a week of operation and I'm very pleased with the results.

Can't speak so highly of the Comet antenna though, I'm relatively new to SDR (using an AirSpy R2) I can get Scottish control reliably but EGCC tower and ATIS are weak and might just be obstructed by Alderly Edge.

Hi,

Just joined this Radarbox monitoring of planes.

Two years ago I started my first Radio project and that is " Radio Meteor Observation " or as it is called RMO (www.rmob.org) with a RTL-SDR dongle and a DIY 4 element Yagi antenna for the frequency of 174.31 MHz.

At the same time in order to understand the SDR radio stuff I made a little 1090 MHz antenna and then it started collecting dust until two days after getting my USB Flightstick I installed the Antenna again and now it is monitoring on a 24/7 PC the planes over my location.

Below the non professional set up of the two antennas. On the top of the PVC pipe the tiny 137mm dipole for 1090MHz. The dipole is 8.3 meters over ground level and ground level is 1950meter over sea level.

BTW I am also an amateur astronomer with an Observatory in the garden of the house.
